As some of you know I`ve recently gotten back into riding (now as an adult) after having a long (15yr+) break from 6 years of riding as a child.

I`m now starting to ask all those questions that never occurred to me as a child (Wasn`t tall enough for one!). I`ve got thinking about this one in particular as I keep glancing at the empty paddock out on our plot and then thinking about "what might I put in there................................slippery slope I know). I`m not thinking for now but more for maybe next year....

what I was wondering was what other breeds of horses can live out 24/7 that are over 15h 2. I love the welshies but they don`t seem to go over 15h2. I think I MAY need something slightly taller. I`ve been looking at some pics of myself on a 15 1 welshie and can`t decide.........I`m all leg unfortunately at 5ft 10.

We've got a little herd ranging from 13hh to 17.2hh all living out 24/7. Most of our horses are ID crosses and they all do just fine. With adequate shelter, ad lib fibre and good rugging just about any horse could live out 24/7.

Many, many breeds fulfil this criteria, although I must admit the one that sprung to mind straight away were Irish Draughts. Lots of medium - heavy weight purebreeds and cross breeds will fulfil this criteria, and lots grow to over 15.2, so don't worry!

ANY horse can live out.
I have 6 living out:
a shettie
a wlshie
a connemara
2 cobs and a tb

The cob, the tb and the welshie live out on the side of a valley with only natural shelter.

All happy as larry

Welshies do go over 15.2, but tend to look less cobby as they get leggier. In any event, I'm 6' and have got 2 15.2s, one Welsh, one TB, and look fine on them, also look fine on instructor's 17hh warmblood, so don't necessarily discount the smaller horse if its got enough bone to carry you and a wide enough barrel to take up your leg. Any breed should be able to live out in theory (mine all do) depending on your particular circumstances and that particular example of the breed. Modern rugs are much better than they used to be meaning you can keep horses warm and dry much easier than before, even if they are clipped for work, a bit of shelter, a bit of extra feed if they need it in winter, Bob's your Uncle!

Don't discount Welsh cobs - unfortunately there is no upper height limit on Section D's, and some studs (Maesmynach springs to mind) produce cobs up to 16 hands.

I have 2 ID's and a IDxTB living out all year round, one of the IDs is my hunter, clipped out, no field shelters, plenty of hay and rugs, they love it !!

i like to think ANY type of horse can live out 24/7, with the right care, tailering that care to the individual horse, i have a woosy arab that lives out with a rug on and onley gets fed hay.
I am now waiting to get shot down for this comment

I do love the Welshies.......... our family have had them for ages..............just always much smaller as my relatives weren`t as tall.

Just keeping my eye on the market at present....... it makes interesting reading flicking through all the classifieds! Hopefully fingers crossed can really start thinking about things mid year so I`m doing as much research as poss now.

I have 8, all live out, some are rugged. They are all TBxWarmblood types and are perfectly happy and healthy. I have round bales of haylage put in the field which they are now ignoring in favour of tiny grass shoots!!! They only have natural shelter in the form of Cornish hedging.

i have a idxtb who is fully clipped she is rugged and lives out with a shelter she has no problems living out she is well rugged and is quite happy

Horse are meant to live out remember, it doesn't matter what their breed is, they are designed to live out!

I actually think TBs are some of the hardiest horses though, they just seem to love being outside in all weathers.

If you like welsh maybe try going for a welsh x TB to try get some more height or a connie x TB (I am bias as I have one!) but don't worry about what can and what can't live out!

wow, I didn`t realise that. I stupidly have always associated TB's etc with living in stables. I don`t like the idea of stables and like animals to live as naturally as possible.

I`m looking for a nice calm breed as I`m not as adventurous as I used to be...........or bounce as high as I used to. rofl. Seem to have a renewed sense of preservation since having my LO....................

I have a haflinger x shire so he's geared for it! however my friend has a Arab x welsh and hes 14'2 and 17 yrs old - hes fine out 247 with no rug. i think it depends on the horse

Yes any breed can live out but you don't want to be packing it full of feed to keep the weight on. I have an RID and IDx and they are fine outside all year round. We did have a shetland on loan some years ago and she was a right wuss despite having a thick winter coat. Used to stand at the gate shivering.

Lina poo is 15.2 and lives out ConnemaraX TB - good rugs should do the trick!

I know every one will say that all types can live out but if you get a native X I think they would take to it easier. Something with a bit of fluff :-)
