Got a bit of an issue which I am hoping might know about...
my mare is currently out on loan with view to buy...people are more then happy with her and now want to buy her - she has only been with them a week...
She is a grey and does have quite a few melanomas under her tail, one has slightly weeped and on vet instruction wash out with salt water...all ok....before that I was told to just leave them be, they are fine and not an issue...
well the person has now said she wants to reduce the price as she is not too happy about them and had a horse before who had to be put down with them...! first I have heard about it...
She rang today and also mentioned there were melanomas in her mouth too...size of golf balls apparently...I do not believe they get this in their mouths but she said she had looked in her vet book and it details it...
problem I have is her husband is a vet and she wants her to be inspected...although I am only asking for 900 for her - 13.2hh grey NF mare, has competed, good in traffic, load the lot really a home is more important then money...I do feel I am kinda playing into her hands as her vet partner might say anything which means the price would have to be lowered....
what should I do...? A vet saw her last year and said there is nothing wrong...A vet saw her last month too and said again nothing really wrong so what would you do...? I am trying to get the details from my old loaning home who had the vet to her so I could ring and ask them to print the details...? Is this a good idea...I will not be the type to argue over money but im not giving my mare away...I have owned her for 15 good years and she has always had the best of the best so I know she is health and a good buy...!!

I think they are trying to have you over, which is a bit sad as you are asking a very reasonable price for the pony already. It does make me wonder if they intend to keep it, or move it on quick for a profit

I replied in the other forum - but fundementally it was exactly the same as Vici's reply! Tell them to get stuffed!

well this is exactly what I thought too...!
I did notice she was holding her mouth slightly differently when she returned last week from her loan home but she looked great and I know they looked after her well so not too sure what these lumps are inside...the vet also checked over her last month with the loanees and I would of thought he would have seen them..? Her bit would not have rubbed and she had reg dental checks...
I said I would go to 800 but nothing lower as she is 15yrs old. I do not use her now and would like her to go to a good home and make someone happy but she is not free....
the people already have five other horses so quite angry this is being brought up now really...especially as 800 these days is not really alot of money...
I said she is to be bought as seen...
I had a really good vet friend who would check my horses over for me all the time and she confirmed last yr there was nothing wrong with them, so unless they do develop then there is not much I can do really...! She is 15 so she has had them since she was 3 which mean 12 good years so she might go for another 12 yrs fine so why lower the price...ekkk!
I did say money does not matter but like I said Im not just going to flog her...its really not fair..im in the middle of exams, bathroom and kitchen being re-done and hubby in germany on business so really quite stressed about it all :0(

My feeling is that if they were remotely bothered by them, they would have her on loan and not want to buy her. What is £900 if the pony is right for them?! My old grey mare has loads of melanomas, is 24 and still breeding - this will prob be her last foal cos she has so many round her rear that we won't be able to stitch her up again - but no reason she won't last a few more years being a Nanny.

Don't drop the price, and I would be tempted to have her back anyway - I hate people who do this - it's just a try-on.

thanks everyone....
melanomas have stopped weeping - it was one which was rubbing on her dock slightly, but it has cleared up and all fine now.
I will keep to my budget and make sure I am not taken for a fool...
much appreciated everyone ...Ill keep you posted as to what happens...

just as an add on, if the melanoma HAS got significantly worse, there is some interesting treatment research with Cimetidine which is though to reduce the size of them

Do you have a link for it watcher?, share horse has two melanomas.

Hello, don't come on here very often, but this post interested me.
My friend has a 22yr old grey 3/4 Thoroughbred mare, who has a cluster of melanomas under her tail.
Around June last year she honestly thought she was going to lose her, and the vet admitted later, his thoughts were she had a couple of weeks left ,tops.
He decided to try her on Cimetidine, they definetly shrank noticably, and now, a year on,Sal is back doing dressage ( and winning!) and looking a million dollars! Its wonderful to see this lovely old horse enjoying herself again, so melanomas needn't be the end of the story.
