Over cautious owners

Just wanted to add that the tie up rings are only about 4ft off the ground at this yard - possibly less and I have seen him manage it even tied up short.

As for the horse being tied up without food etc. I have to tie beau up for up to 30mins when I muck out. If he doest get something to eat its dangerous as he will start to get upset as the others get fed when I just get up to muck out.

I leave Beaus door open if I am pottering about as he will not come out as long as he has food, and if a nose does poke out a VERY stern "BACK" and he will go back in his box.

And before you all go flaming me I am VERY anal about tidying up and making sure the yard is safe - well I was, I have just about given up as the little shits - I mean darlings - leave it looking like Basra with stuff everywhere!

Flash puts his leg over the top of the middle bar of the fence when he's tied up and wants attention. I always go and sort it out, for him as he sometimes pulls back and pulls his shoes off and has cut himself doing it a few times, but as soon as I correct him and turn my back he puts his leg straight back over again. He does it in the field too, very annoying, but what can you do?? move his leg and he gets the attention and does it again, don't move it and he hurts himself. Stupid horse

Harri_and_Flash, I feel your pain. At least Major only does it on a rope here so never hurts himself, but he used to have a habit of doing it on the lower rungs of the gate at my ex's house and I quite often had to go rescuing him when a shoe got stuck.

Sometimes they can be so smart. Other times they are the biggest muppets in the world lol!

however saying that if Frankie wanted to sniff someone over the door, or vice versa, i would not be the kind of person to be like 'oh my baby keep away from him!'

I think that's quite interesting - I wonder how many other people have similar views??

To my mind that is massive accident waiting to happen. We never let horses do that.

I'm with you on this one as my mare greets new horses by attempting to shake hooves

I think that some people forget that even a very well mannered horse can , funnily enough, behave like a 'wild' horse in some situations.

you cruel and heartless individual!! You shouldn't be allowed to have a horse, you bad egg! PMSL!!!

We are mean. I seem to remember me and you standing watching him whilst yapping on the yard. And I bet he was standing with his leg under his chin thinking "dammit, why aren't they talking to me? GIVE ME ATTENTION!!!"

Spoiled brat that he is. But got to love him.

Ohhh, careful - I think we might get reported to the ILPH shortly!! hehe. I mean our poor poor horses, they suffer so badly

If Beau was any more wrapped up at the moment I think he would bounce back up if he fell over. But seriously - I bought a hardy horse because of what he withstand so to speak! 3 years and never needed the vet, never seriously hurt himself, never been lame, never been underweight, never been left dirty or unfed - so what if they get left with their leg over a lead rope for a few mins when they are attention seeking? If he was tied up short he would be more at risk from hanging himself that he woul dbe of breaking a leg.

You can't surely believe that's ok?

Please restore my faith in you Beau

Reported to the ILPH? Again you mean?

They are such hard done by individuals. How they struggle on I will never know...

I finally gave in and put Major's heavyweight rug on this morning. I was annoyed at breaking my original plan of not til it snows but he was a bit cold when he came in last night so I took pity.

AmyMay, Beau2005 has been with me when he has done it and as she will no doubt assure you, it is all an act. If a child threw itself on the floor having a tantrum would you run to pick it up every time? I sure as hell wouldn't

Last comment on this one - because you clearly don't understand how dangerous it is allowing a horse to be in this situation.

There is a massive difference between a child having a tantrum and a dumb animal being put in a position where it could potentially seriously damage itself.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. But having seen the end results of horses tied in the manner in which you describe - I know what I would rather do....

AmyMay - Really, if you could see his face when he does it he is playing - he has the cheekiest look , almost as if he is smirking/smiling at you, and he will just do it again when you walk away. He will just stand there eating with his leg over the leadrope - he really and truely doesn't care, and it ' just FAAAAAAR to much effort for him to create when tied up - other than the leg/rope thing Major is well behaved tied up. And it is tied up properly - quick release knot etc. But the height of the rings really doesn't help - a foot higher and he wouldn't be able to do it.

Unlike Beau who dances and sings and stamps and mugs people who walk past or does his latest trick of pinning himself against the wall and trying to half strangle/hang himself to see whats going on behind him

I think we're having healthy debate aren't we????

i take it you didnt read the recent thread about a horse hanging itself on baler twine- it is ALOT stronger than you think. Just because it snaps once doesnt mean it will next time.

Personally i would not tie my horse up if they kept getting legs tangled in ropes, or would tie up short enough that they couldnt manage it.

Not when people start making comments such as "I hope to god there are some sensible mobile grooms out there, cos if they're all like you I sure as hell am not leaving my neddies ...ever!!" which are totally unfounded and potentially damaging to my business.

Really, spend a day at my yard and tell me if I seem in any way irresponsible to you. Then make a comment as bitchy as the one you just made JBJ

She hasn't ever said she would leave someone else's horse like this!! She knows her horse is doing it for attention seeking, and that he will still keep trying to do it, and he is HER horse. I would never trust another horse the way I trust Beau. At least she ties him up! I have lost count of the times the kids just stick the lead rope through the ring or twine and just make a massive knot in the end of it - unsecured to anything - and allow the horse to wander about!

And as for lying up long - the BHS riding school I was at used to tie up the horses in the stalls on long leadropes with a block at the end, and these were long enough for horses to get legs over, which they frequently did, and the BHS was fine with that.

I personally think that tie up rings should be at least 5ft up for horses so that legs are well away from ropes. But you can also argue that tieing up short is dangerous as if horse suddenly went down it would break its neck rather than its leg as it would not have enough rope to be able to stretch up.

I completely sympathise - I hate to see horses mollycoddled by their owners. HOWEVER... You sound lucky enought to be in ownership of a nice sensible horse! I've got a youngster at the moment who is the stupidest horse I have ever come across, without a shread of common sense!

For example, just last week I tied him up outside his stable (bottom door closed, top door open) and he actually attempted to jump back into his stable through the top door, while still tied up! I'm sure you can imagine the mess he got himself into!!!

He is a very good natured horse, but I always have to be on my guard for potential incidents. I only hope that I don't go round annoying everyone else too much in the process!

Personally I've never had a problem with twine. We've had some very flighty horses in the riding school who would freak out at everything and it always snapped and we never had any injuries because of it.

Major is also VERY strong for his size and unless he is well bribed to stay put with food he snaps it without fail. So I've never used anything else. Although in the lorry we had those velcro things which were good
smile.gif

Totally agree.

And surely it is better to be over cautious as opposed to an accident actually happening then saying oh maybe we shouldnt have done that.

Well, if I'm honest, I sort of feel the same as JBJ. The concerning thing is (and I'm harping on sorry) the glib manner in which you think that allowing your horse to put his leg over a lead rope and leaving him like that is acceptable. Also the lack of understanding you seem to have about how a horses mind works - they really are not that clever. And I'm really not sure that you can compare a child's tantrum to a horse's alledged attention seeking.

I think that some of the things you have said in the this post are potentially damaging to your business - not JBJ's comments. And in your shoes I would think very carefully about the sort of comments you make in future about how a horse should be managed. The horse world is very, very small - and you never know who knows who, and who posts etc. on HHO.

I wouldn't be happy leaving my horse in your care because of things you have said in this post. Which is a shame, because you probably do a very, very good job.

You obviously have a way of doing things that works for you. It's just a little alarming to some of us.......

I used baler twine for 15 years and just a few months ago my horse freaked and the leadrope broke before a halfed twine did- resulting in horse falling over. I would of said the same as you "that I'd never had any problems with it" however maybe its made differently now as I have heard alot of horror stories

We always tie to twine - be it on a lead rope or a bungie.
