Opinions please...just been talking to my sis who is a vet. This is a pic of the horse I looked at today and he's looking more and more like a no than a yes
I tried a horse that did the same thing. He had really dodgy conformation on the hindlegs. You could see (in hindsight) that the angles were very wrong.
I was advised by a vet friend that he probably wouldn't stand up to the work I wanted.
There's a few more photos. This one came from the owners facebook, and they're all similar. Rear fetlocks horizontal in canter pics and pretty extended in trot pics. Sister said it's inevitable it'll result in arthritis. Can't be good.
The fact that it is front and back would make it seem less likely to be just a photo moment I think - sorry.
That said I knew a horse in the USA which had the weirdest movement you've ever seen, used to over extend like that, and swiveled its hinds when it moved. It was never lame and when they vetted it nothing they did could make it take even one lame step, it carried on happily moving in its own sweet and very bizarre way. It was just v loose through all its joints apparently.
I always notice this in pics - my friend had a lovely pro pic from a dressage show and her horse was doing this and she has owned him 10years and didnt know he did this till she saw this particular pic - anyway after we noticed it on her horse its suprising how many do this but you just dont notice till u get a still shot like this.
IMo, this horse is hyperextending his fetlock. Whilst you couldn't be certain from the picture alone, this can be seen in horses with damage to the suspensory apparatus. Could also be normal for this horse, ie long pastern
It is not that unusual but can result in abnormal wear and tear. That particular horse does seem to have poor confirmation but I have seen it in some that are better put together.
