Yep I use one too for extra safety. Only prob can be trying to tighten the girth up when you're onboard, but there is always someone around to quickly loosen the overgirth while you tighten main one!
Ohhhhhhh I am SO glad you posted this as I meant to ask after watching Burghley!
As an oldie (OK, so only 33) we ALWAYS wore overgirths when going XC. In fact I would feel rather strange not using one TBH. Now I know girths are better than they used to be, and some saddles have the *over girth* under, but why do so many people opt out of using them?
I don't, and wouldn't think to use one hunting or up to PN (all I've done) but not sure why doing above would make your girth more likely to snap? Suppose it's an extra safety thing, so well worth using!
Hmm, I have been thinking about it quite a bit, the yard I worked on used them on everything regardless of the level competing at, and even on single flap saddles, as they can give a valuable few seconds if anything should happen....but as of yet havent thought to use one for the XC I have done....a girth can snap at any time regardless of the level of competition....so think prob should use one!!
I use single flap saddles- and always use an overgirth. As above I havent ever had a girth snap- but have had snapped reins / cheek pieces / leathers. I guess its routine, and I like the feeling of extra security.
Used to use one and not sure why I stopped really, the one I have is ancient and in the bottom of a tack box somewhere. Were certainly more common in the days of old webbing girths.
never seen the point really!! used one at aldon in the 2day but i think that was just to look the part!! Lol didnt use one for either of the 3days either!
i always use one, i would feel naked without going xc
it would prevent serious injury if the girth did snap
its possible
its like boots for xc-incase the hit the jump
body protectors, hats etc!
