Am currently typing one-handed so please excuse grammar/spelling :)

I got thrown off my loan horse on Monday evening while doing canter work in the school. He wasn't happy that there were ywo geldings in the next feild and had thrown a few bucks/bunny hops earlier in the session but had been doing very good trot/corners work for about half an hour. I decided to do a length of canter but misjudged the corner and he had to turn quite sharp. Second attempt he just threw all his toys out the pram. No breaks, started bucking and after a few I came off over his right shoulder and got a clean-through break to my humerus.

I know anyone can come off but am just questioning my ability to bring on an ex-racer now. On hacks he is lovely, not bothered by traffic but has no brakes in canter. He's fine in trot/walk. I am having a professional start schooling him 2 days a week and it will be several wks before I can do anything but think even then I will avoid canter work til he and I are both better balanced.

His owner is seriously wondering if I want to send him back. I don't, but I am prepared to listen if its best for him, I just don't know what I should do?

Give yourself a break- you've come off once, yes it was a bad fall but we all come off eventually.

Do you have anyone to ride him whilst you are out of action? Sounds like you are understandably shaken and seeing someone else ride and him not being fresh for you to get back on when you are healed may make it easier for you both.

Hope you're feeling better soon x

Don't beat yourself up over this fall , as long as you remain dedicated and except that from time to time he's going to throw the toys and needs to be handled consistently but firmly. I'm sure you are capable else you probably wouldn't have taken him on in the first place. Go back to hacking and get lessons or a helper if your going in the school to help keep you both focused. Hope you get better quickly!!

Have some time off, have the proffesional school him to establish the basics then get them to give you a few lessons once your arm is better!. They will know what the horse is like by the and will hopegully be able to get your confidence back up :)

I have schooled a few ex-racers and generally canter is the hardest one to get round. I used to re-school a mare who had raced for some years and was so used to cantering on the straight with only shallow left turns only she had no comprehension of cantering on the right lead or on a smaller turn. It took a good few weeks with her of me schooling her twice a week for her to even start to relax and realise it wasn't that bad! Mind you she was an older ex-racer that had raced for some years, the problem is not so common in those that are ex-racers who didn't make the grade as often they have not spent such a large amount of time training or on the track.

Stick with him, it doesn't sound like you have had him long (?) and i am sure once you are back riding, in a couple of months, weeks even you will look back and see what improvements you have made :)
