over night starve?

Yes, you need to starve him for 12 hours and then feed him the glucose meal at 0.1% of his weight (so 500 g for a 500 kg horse). Then the bloods must be taken between one and two hours after the meal.

You think that but honestly how long when stabled do they run out of feed!

They should not be without feed for more than a max of 4 hours. I give the last haynets at 10 pm and as they are trickle nets, they usually last more than 5 hours. Others that are on adlib haylage still have some left in the morning.

Well your lucky wagtail, my yard closes at 9pm so i cant feed after this time, one of my mares is fine and has her ad lib hay and there is some left in the morning. My youngster that has a trickle net gets fed as late as possible but i would safely bet that being the piggy that she is its gone by midnight by the latest probably more like 10pm and she wont get fed till 7am next morning.

Wagtail - READ the original post. The pony is being starved on veterinary orders.

Yes, I know. I answered the op in my previous post advising the 12 hours was the amount of time she needed to starve her horse for the vet. My reference to four hours was in response to a different post.

Yes, I see what you mean. I have timed three horses during the day with a full trickle net though and they have all taken at least five hours to eat it. Do you have the original £30 trickle nets?

Just went through this with my horse in the last 24 hours, The vet was coming at 9 am this morning to do the bloods and glucose test, so put my horse in the stable at 6 pm last night 2 and a half flaps of hay in a large holed haynet, I knew he would have finished it by about 9/10pm.

It's a hard thing to do knowing the horse will be hungry later in the night and in the morning, it goes against all our instincts as good owners, not being able to feed him when I got to the yard this morning was awful especially as he was roaring at me and looking all confused. Not nice!! I'm now waiting on the blood test results, he's got liver damage and has lost loads of weight but still don't know the cause, hell for me now waiting for the phone call. Hope it all goes well with your horse Tango's Mum.

thankyou. hes had 2 before, but couldnt remember how long to starve him for... vet will be coming at 10 am wednesday morning. so will give him his last hay net about 6, then go take it away at 8 pm.. then glucose at 8 am next morning. ready for vet at 10... he was very ir last time he was tested, but couldnt treat as his cushings wasnt properly controlled, hes also having another acth test...
