My horse has to wear over reach boots for riding and turnout whilst he has heart bar shoes on.

How long can you leave them on? I was thinking if I ride in the morning, could I leave them on in the stable for when he is turned out for an hour in the afternoon?

Also, when he goes back out in the proper field, I will be paying someone else to turn him out. Can I leave the over-reach boots on over night so the person turning out doesnt have to pull them on? I suppose this would mean he would have the boots on for most of the day?

I think a friend who I used to be on a yard with used to do this with no problems, surely as long as I check daily that his hoof/leg underneath the boots is clean and dry..?

Thanks

depends on your horse really, my old man had them on 24-7 in the summer a few years back. he pulled a muscle in his back and as a result kept overreaching so didnt take them off until his back was better. I did go through lots of boots though!

My mare cant have them on for long as they rub her badly. I got some with fleece inside for xc and they still rubbed her in less that half hour.

I think if you left them on after riding ready for the afternoon it would be ok but I wouldnt over night. it doesnt take long for someone to put them on for you.

mine used to pull shoes off in the field so was turned out in them, but I did find that the bulbs of his heels got very soft and tender.

I have them on one horse 24/7. I just turn them upwards when in the stable so that his hooves and heels can dry. I haven't had problems with rubbing, but I imagine it depends on the type of boots and the horse.

My horse has just had two bad rubs from overreach boots and they were only on for working.I suppose it depends on the type of horse tbs arent very hairy on their legs so this is why they rubbed badly.I wouldnt use the rubber ones again his mark todd seemed to be the best.Roma do some very soft ones that would probably be ok in field they are more like foam so they might be kinder.

just a quick question: what type of o/reach boots are you using? this will affect how long you can leave them on. Traditional rubber or petal boots will rub a lot easier than something like the woof ones that are moulded to stop them spinning. Also put vasaline on your horse where the boots come into contact with the horses leg, this will protect against rubbing.

I used the standard velcro rubber one's on my boy 24/7 last Summer and didn't have any problems. Like others have said, think it depends on the horse, as long as you're checking daily.

I always used the type like woof wear, dont know why i swapped wont use them again .I have mark todd fabric type so will use them if I school again having some problems at moment with arthritus so Im not sure if schooling is a option until we have xrays.

I leave mine on 24/7 my mare and I only take them off when we're showing. As long as they don't rub I don't see why you can't leave them on for awhile e.g take them off when grooming, being shod etc.
