My daughter's horse sustained an over-reach on Thursday whilst XC schooling in preparation for an event on Sunday. The injury is to his near fore where he struck his coronet band and is approx 1cm in length. Whilst there doesn't appear to be an infection and the horse is sound at walk he is intermittently lame at trot.

I have advised my daughter that she should not compete on Sunday. However, she is keen to bute up and hope for the best.

Any thoughts? Thanks for reading.

Well if she butes up now, the bute won't be out of the horse's system for the comp tomorrow, so it's a no brainer. That's horses, I'm afraid.

Tell your daughter to not be so horribly selfish and put her horses welfare first. If she was my kid she wouldn't be going to the event even if horse did come right in time for even suggesting it. Aside from the fact that the horse is in pain, she could create a much worse injury by overreaching again and really increase the risk of infection. Bute is a banned drug for a reason and there is a major difference between giving a stiff horse a small bit of bute to aid aches and pains and buting up an acute injury

I would suggest if the horse is lame from a simple over-reach.....then it is NOT a simple over-reach.
'Buting the horse up' is not only against the rules....but bad horsecare management. The pain is there for a reason and is telling you that it may need further investigation. Your daughter is obviously upset that she will not be able to compete.....but that is the ups and downs of horses. You will have many more days like these.
Remember to tell her.....the horse has a steel toe to the hind shoe.....and struck in to the soft area of the coronary band...it is going to be very sore.
Hopefully....you will read these replies to your daughter.....she will sigh philosopically....and you can have a mother and daughter non horsey day out instead:)
Best wishes
Bryndu

Thank you everyone for your replies. My daughter has read the thread and has indeed sighed philosophically. Horse will be off work until sound, as originally advised by me! I guess I just had to post the question to back my own decision up and show her that others think along the same lines as me.

Well done Squirrel.
We have been in the same boat many times over the years. It does teach them to put their horse's well-being above everything else. There will always be another day if injuries are managed carefully after all.
