I know this time of year many people have had or are about to clip their horses.None of mine get clipped because they are no longer ridden. My youngster is currently in a medium weight with a neck in the stable and as soon as we start getting some really cold weather he will also wear an under rug beneath this.I do this to try and keep his coat down so he is ready to come out for the first show in the spring and hopefully will not be too hairy ,the others have an under rug too because they are old.We have brick stables but often i get accused of over rugging mine! How many do you put on yours?

both of mine are TB's and both are clipped - they were one med weight combo unless its absolutely freezing when they might get a fleece on underneath - never had a prob with either of them being cold.....

Georgie has a hunter clip and is currently in a full neck 250g underrug with a 150g stable rug over the top at night. During the day he is in a 400g heavyweight with full neck. He is toasty warm.

Mine live out al year round, Beau is currently in a 300g no neck, Lance in a 250g.
theyonly have one rug on at a time, the heaviest Beau has is his rambo pus at 370g, but Im thinking of getting him a Premier Equine 450g.

Lanceo nly needs a medium weight all year round.

Mine has a customised type of blanket clip, and he's in a rain sheet in the day (will move up to a 50g fill when it's colder), and has a cotton summer sheet on in the stable overnight, but that's just to keep his coat clean (bedded on rubber matting and a sprinkle of shavings).

The heaviest rug I own is a 240g Masta half neck, and I think he's only every worn that twice since I bought it last winter (was living out 24/7 until this winter)

He is the hottest horse I've ever known, and is always really toasty and warm, even with so little rugging (YO checks them late at night). He's also a chunky cob, so I'm hoping that not over-rugging him will help him drop a few kg!

Mine are out 24/7. The one who is hunter clipped is wearing a 370gm H/W Rhino plus turnout. The one who is unclipped, and hasn't grown that much of a winter coat, is wearing a 220gm M/W rhino plus turnout.

Marius has a trace clip (and needs doing again) and a very thick winter coat - he's part Connemara. I regret to say that I feel I over rug him, even though he is usually in a light or medium turnout (100g or 220g) with a no-fill neck cover if it's raining. Last night (-5) he was in his stable with a 370g rug on, as I think they get cold just standing. I never know whether to rug for the clipped bits or the winter coat bits. Maybe I would be better having him hunter clipped, but then he is 22 and semi retired, and I think his back is better covered; but he does get hot when worked.
It's all a puzzle

Mine are out 24/7 with a field shelter & only come in overnight if it's raining.

My ISH is fully clipped apart from legs & he's in a snuggy's hood, duvet & heavyweight FAL with neck cover.

My old mare isn't clipped & is wearing a heavyweight rug with neck cover.

I try to adjust rugs according to weather, but it's jolly cold today so I've got everything on!

Mine are out 24/7 with a field shelter and stable always open. My unclipped native ponies aren't rugged, the get 1 turnout chucked on if the weathers really wet / snow just because they are older nowadays and one suffers from slight athritis so I do try to keep her a bit warmer. My other 2 who are hunter clipped (a Welsh D and a TB x Luso) usually only have 1 rug on all winter as well! My Welsh D has a WB Orican standard neck, I add the neck if its really cold (he's a very hot horse generally). And my TB x Luso wears a Rambo Duo (with 300g liner) and neck (when its not broken...), in the worst weather I will put on an under full neck rug.

Mine live out 24/7 with good natural shelter and plenty of hay and haylage. My two youngsters normally wear MW standard rugs...throughout the winter...but have MW rugs with hoods for colder weather, and HW's with hoods for severe weather (blizzards, gales, etc)
My old TB mare (unclipped) wears a high neck HW, then has a HW full neck at night...and a full neck underrug for severe weather, but she's a delicate flower...

I only ever have natives. At this time of year I would be putting a lightweight turnout on, and maybe a fleece in the stable. Come January when the temp drops i might move up to a light mediumweight in the field and a light stable rug in the stable.

Mine has a chaser and is wearing a 180 and a cotton sheet as an underug, I am hoping to clip him out soon so don't want to put anything thicker on him or, come January, I will be stuck for rugs!

mine has a blanket clip that needs clipping again. he wears a 300gm stable rug no neck and when he goes out i put a summer rain sheet over that. when he gets clipped again he will wear a high neck rambo 400gm!

Just the one MW with no neck, although I am off shopping today for a rug with a built in full neck (I hate neck covers, have yet to find one that doesn't move or leak) for Lola who is feeling the cold a bit even now and it's only -11C.

Highland is unclipped - I know she should be able to cope without a rug but because she has previously had rain scald I have her in a standard medium weight rug. TBxID has been clipped one, is in a standard MW outdoor rug with another lightweight underneath. Both are out during the day and in at night

out 24/7 - aren't i cruel

none are clipped, all naked at the mo, we will be rugging them in MW in a week or so.

my 'poor doer' anglo arab is positively fat

my mare is now 17 and shes on the slim side as you can see her ribs.
she used to be out no rugs all the time on a big hill with haylage.
she feels the cold now so shes got a m/w rug with a neck and i will put another rug underneath if it gets colder.
my yearling is a total wimp and shes got a h-h/w normal to on.shes in good condition-can just see her ribs but i dont want her any skinnier
both out all day and in at night.there is not much grass left so they pretty well just have hay in the field and at night!!

Reading this post I now feel I over rug.
At the minute shes in a Rambo Supreme which is 420grams and an under rug which is about 200grms.

She really does feel the cold and never gets hot in her rugs. She also has thermatex leg wraps on at night.
She is fully clipped out.

None of mine are clipped; most are rugged with one rug, always Fals or Rambos. The old horse has a Fal outer rug and when winter comes full blown to -30 or -40 he gets 2 stable rugs put under his outer rug, but the others all remain in their 1 rug each.

solo is blanket clipped at the mo and is wearing his 360g weatherbeeta arion combo through the day and when its very cold he'll have a 220g underrug combo underneath that.
red is hunter clipped and is wearing his 300g weatherbeeta orican combo through the day, when its very cold he'll probably have a 200g underrug on too.
at night, when they are in, solo wears his 400g pessoa stable rug with the 220g underrug combo on, and red wears his 350g slumberdown (fal) stable rug with a 200g underrug.
both feel the cold- solo moreso than red, and their boxes are very open.

Enough that they feel a comfortable temperature!

Seriously I alter the rugs according to the weather & the last thing I d before I go is check that they feel warm enough but not to hot - if I'm not happy then I change rugs accordingly.

Quote:
HW turnout with neck and 300g quilt underneath (she's a wimp) but then again she is out 24/7 with ad lib haylage

WHOAH!!!!

Anyway, my yearling forest is unrugged, my chaser clipped 16yo nf is rugged ina LW in the day and a medium weight at night

Missy is in a weatherbeeta under rug combo in the day and that with a lightweight turnout overnight.
Olympic is fully clipped (legs/face...the whole shabang!) and I find at the moment that he isn't really that warm so he has a fleece hood, under rug combo (only a light one), a light duvet and a warm stable rug. with that he feels perfect!

My oldies are rugged but live out 24/7 unless it snows. One has a heavyweight the other a mediumweight . Both get really long coats but one in heavyweight doesnt maintain his weight well so hopefully the rug helps a bit. My sec b has a heavyweight for the bad weather. She isnt wearing it yet but if it gets really wet and windy she feels the cold.

My TB has a heavyweight with neck cover as she only gets a fine winter coat and she comes in at night. I dont like loads of rugs on at a time as I feel there is more for the horse to get tangled up in.
