"Over" rugging= more regular clipping?

As the subject implies, who is of the opinion that horses that wear 400+ grams worth of rugs,when it is not really that cold, actually need clipping more regularly than horses that wear less rugs? I say this as i am of the opinion that when you whip 400+ grams worth of rugs off a horse the body gets a bit of a shock with the temperature drop and the body says to grow more hair, just a thought

The 2 that i clipped last year were only done twice, admittedly they had blanket clips but neither went into any heavier rugs than the equivalent of 350 grams and the temp dropped and stayed around the -15 mark for over a month, they also only ever went out in medium weights in the field.

I've found this year, that because it's still quite mild, I haven't been able to get my full clipped boy out of his light weights as he gets too hot very easily, consequently he now needs clipping again, so has grown back a lot of coat despite always being hot! I think that the light affects their hair growth as well as the temperature.

I agree, mine seems to be growing his coat really quickly this year. He was clipped 3weeks ago and all this week has been really sweaty when riding.

I think the light plays at least as much if not more part in the growth of a winter coat than temp. Ours have masses of coat for the temps - if their bodies were listening to the temperatures then they would still have summer coats, the short days have got their winter coats growing and then then need more clipping as they are cooking hot otherwise!

Yup- coat growth is light dependant over and above anything else.

I've found this too, i've just re clipped one after just 3 weeks and i was amazed at the amount of hair he had. the other one really needs doing again but the £70 for sedation is putting me off so he'll have to be a sweaty scruff for a bit

i dont know how i have managed this but have got away without clipping apart from a small small trace clip beginniing of october... having put rugs on since summer, have found there is not a lot of hair, and few rugs ...
been doing hunter trials and everything perfectly well!

I know what you mean, and it's such a horrid, itchy job too! Every year I say i'm not clipping til November and every year I do it in October and then again 4 weeks later, will I ever learn?

Nadia's hair has grown back 2 after only 2 weeks. she's in a fleece at night and that makes her hot and a lw in the day and she seems comfortable in that.

well over the last 3 winters of owning my mare her winter hair growth has got less each year due to rugging up well (another one who needs full sedation - doh) and a clip lasts her all winter if i do it late enough - so i don't think its true for her

def not true for mine-tried really hard last year to not rug up more than needed and had to clip virtually weekly......bunged a couple of under rugs on and didnt have to clip again at all!

Ummmmm, one of mine had a full clip 3 weeks ago and as we are now back to t-shirt weather he looks ready for another one, probably going to have to do him next week, booo. I wonder if i will get away with only another 2 clips though (i sooo hate the hairs down the bra business!) Has the weather been similar in Uk to here, cold 3 weeks ago and now mild?

Daylight hours makes sense though, as the weather has got warmer here you would expect that his coat would not have grown so much

Not sure, but Genie had her third clip of the winter last weekend, and she was first clipped end of September. I don't rug her too much (hunter clipped and happy out at night in a medium-weight TO) so for her the rugging less doesn't seem to stop the coat pushing through!
