Over the fences and not through them?

Took my gorgeous girlie jumping this weekend for the first time - she is very green (6 yo) and steering is a bit hit and miss. Canter is also not much of a strong point too! But hey ho, thought I'd give it a go.

We managed to go through most of the fences - bless her she just kept going - so honest. Need to take her back to basics I believe but do you have any suggestions for some good exercises to help her get the OVER message??

If I can get and maintain canter it might help! I believe she hunted in Ireland but that is very much in a straight line!

I think you need a balanced canter before I'd even try. I tried my new ponio over a little log at the weekend. I have seen her loose jump but not sure if she ever had a rider on. It was a good start for her as I have no facilities. I walked then trotted then cantered her over it.

if shes still unbalanced you could try some lunging work once shes learned to balance herself shell find it much easier with you on board. Maybe could lunge over some fences aswell with placing poles to help with takeoff, lots and lots of flatwork is what id suggest but i do believe in keeping practicing with your jumping as each time youll learn something new just keep them small and simple until your both on the same page.. will all come togeather im sure. I found i did lots of cantering out on hacks aswell to help build mine up as no stress and hassle for either of you.
