Hello H&H,

I am a newbie but have been reading posts on here for ages, thought I better join!

I just moved my new horse to his new yard, long story short there was various things happening when he moved. I checked his passport and his vaccinations were due the day after I moved him and I have been told that because they are a week over the 1 year mark that I have to start all over again and this will cost about £200?!!

Why? why why why?

How annoying for you. However, you may find you can cut the cost slightly. If your horse has had a vaccination recently you can count that as vaccination one. Try and find out if you can do a shared vet visit with people at your yard for vac 2 and 3.

I have attached a link to a riding club website that has a very useful vaccination checker. If you try and put your vacs off until near the last possible dates you can spread them out over a year so you don't feel the cost so much.

Finally..... do you compete BSJA, BD, BE or British Riding Clubs? If you aren't a member of any of these organisations, it's no big deal if your jab is out of date. Your horse will still be protected. Unless it is the yard you are at that are insisting on up to date jabs.

PM me the existing dates of your jabs if you want me to work it out for you.

No I don't compete, just a happy hacker. This is my first time on a yard though, previously I have been on private land with and never had these issues before. I believe it is a yard rule that vaccinations are up to date, but he is living out?

Is it likely I will have to pay for the whole course upfront? x

If you dont compete then one week out will not make a difference to the horses health, its only a problem if u are competing due to the rules. Talk to YO and hopefully they will let you off. Or keep quiet and just get the booster done.

Your horse will still be covered health wise.... Its just the competition rules that say you must not be overdue

So if you dont want to compete you dont need to panic and just get the booster done

As said, it will only need re starting if you compete, otherwise your vet will probably just give the next vaccination. £200 though, who on earth thinks they will cost anywhere near that much

Surely for the course of the three jabs if the course needs restarting, which it looks like it doesnt.... then £200 is about right.... for three callouts and injections???

hey there - I had a look at the vaccination voucher thingy - it randomly was on an advert on horse and hound channel. Unfortunately they have to be 3 months overdue for it to apply. Bummer !

anyhoo - he is in with the vets next week for various things so will have him done then.

Bit of a pain that you have to do it to the day - having researched he is almost certainly covered. Guess they have to cover their backs though. Thanks for all your help everyone x
