Overexcited clydesdale! Help please.

Another like Tizzy - sounds exactly like what I'm doing with mine. Luckily I can walk my filly round the farm tracks next to the road separated by a hedge so she can get used to the sights and sounds whilst being in the safe confines of the farm. She doesn't bat an eyelid at noisy motorbikes, cyclists or buses now, I think it's very sensible to desensitise them to certain things early on. Great for your relationship also as they will see you as their safe place. If I had very quiet lanes or a quiet village id take her out with a nanny horse for a wander but it's fairly busy round here so will wait another year or 2 until she is mentally ready. I'm really looking forwards to backing her in a few years as this will just be an extension of what we have been doing.

Tizzy - I was not saying at all that you had a cheap pony. But there are so many threads asking what to do with yearlings and backing 2yo ect. I just think they should be allowed to be babies while they are.
I have a 2yo myself - he loves to come in from the herd for some love and attention once a week - he also happy to go back out with them. I don't have farm yard tracks and fields to walk him down hence YO walking down the lane. I personally don't think my 2yo is mentally ready for it but then that could be his breeding. And I don't want him having a bad experience so ill wait till his more mature.

My clyde cost £90 from an allotment when he was 9 months.

Funny how everyone wanted to ride him as he was so safe, especially one lady at the yard who had bought a £5,000 horse and could not get the thing down the road. It doesnt matter how much they cost.

I'm not wanting to back him at 2. I still want him to do youngster things and have fun. Like me chasing him round the field and him chasing me, this is a great game for him and he goes bonkers. God knows what the other liveries must think of me when we play.

All I'm concentrating on at the moment is a few ground manners and just taking him out for short walks to start 'bomb proofing' him and also a bit of me and him time away from everyone else, as I do enjoy my cuddles and play time with him.

It's lovely that your making a bond with him and building that partnership.
