Overgirths? Essential or unnecessary?

If you have a rotational fall, the least of your problems is whether or not your stirrups will come off....

In fact, if you have a rotational and are lucky enough to be thrown clear, then I wouldn't expect the stirrups to come off whether or not you have an overgirth on, so I'm not entirely sure what the point you're making is! I also don't understand why an overgirth would stop the stirrup leathers pulling off the stirrup bars - if you're pulling on the leather with enough force to get it off the bar (and lets face it they are hard enough to get off when you're trying let alone when you're not), then a bit of elastic over the saddle won't stop them coming off.
