I think that you should set about finding him a good new owner. Remember that one riders nightmare is another riders dream. And think how happy he will be with his perfect partner!

Take heart in the fact you are doing the best for him aswell as you! x

Not a pointless post at all.

Sorry, I haven't read the other replies (I'm on threaded mode), but you have to do what is right for you and your horse.
If your horse is going to be happier with a different routine and rider, and you're going to be happier with a horse that will be content with what you can offer, then it IS the right thing to do.

It's a very brave, and takes some guts to make a decision like that, so don't be so hard on yourself.

Well done for making this decision.

I had my old horse for 5 more years than i should have (had him 12 in total) - basically I lost all of my confidence (we had been BE eventing, then he started napping/ rearing and would no longer jump, but I kept entering smaller and smaller things and still was getting eliminated etc etc).

I finally made the decision to loan him to a family that love him and he is perfect for them (no jumping -just hacking). I wish so much that I had done it sooner as I think of all of the years I have missed out and that I tried to make something work that probably made both of us unhappy.

I'm gradually getting my confidence back with the horse I have on loan.

Good luck - am sure it is probably for the best as you must have thought alot about this. xx
