Overjumping

Hello All

Ive just come on here for some tips

My 13.3 Welsh has a tendancy to over jump everything and it seems that on my yard a few people really think that this is a bad habit, so thought I would ask on here to see if there is anything I can do about it.

I only jump her up to 3ft max and only do hunting and fun local jumping classes and hunter trails so its no huge deal but she doesnt rush the fences and doesnt take off too early she just puts its huge almighty jumps in each time she takes off, its not uncomfortable or anything but now people have commented I just wondered how bad a fault is it and what things could I do to stop her doing it? Whatever height I jump which will be from 18 inches to 3ft she consitantly does this.

Or should I just let her get on with it?

She really loves jumping imensley and is a very honest little pony but just with people on that yard highlighting it as a problem I thought Id ask advice :-) also, why could over jumping be a problem? xx

Thanks

I don't see the problem here. Sounds like she is just a fab scopey and enthusiastic pony. You couldn't really ask for more when jumping. If she was doing the opposite and ploughing through them all then there would be cause for concern but as long as she's happy and healthy it sounds like she's just enjoying herself. Enjoy it, loads of people would love a pony with that much scope

Well this is what I thought - it doesnt bother me - I love how she is - its just a few people on the yard said its not a very good thing - although they never mentioned why?

I'm happy for her to go on as she is - I just wondered if there was anything to stop her from doing it?

She isnt very scopey to be honest - she is little chunky driving pony - I dont think she would clear more than 3'6

Youngsters sometimes overjump because they are not practised in assessing the height they need to get over the fence....with time they normally sort themselves out.
I'd ignore it, to be honest, but if you want to practice, try some grid work with her.

I'd say it's because they don't want to admit they are jealous! Don't worry about it

Ignore them!

as long as you can stay on, i think it's absolutely fine, and a million times better than ploughing through things, obviously!
it may be a problem if you try to jump combinations and she lands steeply from going so high, and so finds the distance long, that's the only thing.
a pole on the landing side of a small upright, a stride away (the same distance you'd put a placing pole, i'm not sure what distance that would be for a small pony) might help her come down a bit sooner, but it might make her go higher and wider and try to clear it (i've had one do this), so only try if the distances thing to next fence becomes a problem. otherwise, enjoy having such a lovely scopey pony who loves jumping!

My daughters 13 hh pony used to give most jumps huge clearance, she tried various ways to get her to be a bit more realistic about the height of jumps but never succeeded. The only time it was a problem was in jump offs, she sometimes did waste quite a bit of time in the air

ah yes she is young - she is five and has only been broken for a year and a bit - i'll let her get on with it - thanks for the comments - xx

You'll find that she stops doing it, as she gets older and wiser, and perhaps a bit more complacent

It's a good sign though - means she doesn't want to touch the poles.
Be smug.

''she is little chunky driving pony - I dont think she would clear more than 3'6 ''

Im wondering, how many other people have driving poys who jump massive? My 18 year old section b clears tiny crosses as if their 3 foot( i asm retraining him tho), my little midi shettie drivin pony used to jump huge, some of my friends driving ponyes jump huge....Im guessing its just coincidence....or that they know not to knock stuff

I dont see a problem with it as he's young, though i am trying to get my 12'2 jumping smaller as its very uncomfy for me as im so tall on him, and he has a bit of a funny jump
I tihnk the problem comes when your doing courses and stuff
Always good to have scope though!
