Overkill?? Rugging?

Well up here in freezing scotland my unclipped welsh d x has a 100g underrug and a 180g turnout over the top in his stable over night as hes just warm with that on any less and hes cold :o

So I wouldnt say over kill at all!! Unclipped but thin coated TB has a 200g underrug with neck on and a 300g over the top in the stable up here and a 450g turnout on when out during the day.

It is shockingly cold up here right now!! Total brass monkeys

I read somewhere that horses generate 3x the amount of bodyheat that we do..

My TB is chaser clipped and he is wearing a 360g full neck wetherbeeta combo stable rug with a 360g rhino checked standard neck stable rug over the top. He is nice and warm. He was in a lw stable quilt under the wetherbeeta the other night and he was cool in the morning and looked like he was trying to fluff his coat up so he needed a thicker rug IMO.

In the day he is just wearing one 360g full neck master TO rug and he is warm in that. I think the denser warterproof fabric of TO rugs keep them warmer though then the light nylon stable rugs because he always feels warmer when he's wearing his outdoor rug!

Hey there,

In the end I decided to just leave him with his MW, he was stood in when I got there and I had a feel, actually nice and toasty as he is:rolleyes: YO turns him out for me at about 6/6.30 and is going to check for me and I will decide what to do then :D Cheers x

My fully clipped warmblood x is in a 360g heavyweight combo and when the temperature dropped the other night I threw a LW standard neck over the top but come the morning she was warm to touch (not sweaty but warmer than I'd like) and had drank 2 full tubs of water when she's only ever normally drink one so I figured she must have been a bit warm! Now she's back to just the heavyweight combo and feels fine in that. Her stable is indoors too although it is open at both ends and she only has a neightbour on one side, still must be warmed than the outdoor stables because another livery's unclipped TB x has 2 heavyweight combos on, she felt too warm to me but it's hard to say anything...

Totally agree that they are all individual. My 4 are all different. My fully clipped warm blood is in a meduim weight stable rug, fleece and heavy weight with neck cover over the top - he is a warm horse but is very freshly clipped and I checked him at 6.30 and felt comfortably warm. Unclipped warm blood on box rest is one of the coldest horses I've ever met, he is basically in the same as my other one who is fully clipped but does not feel as warm as him however is warm enough (just). I may up him a bit if it drops any colder. Retired IDxTB with no clip has on h/w out door combo and feels perfect - pretty much spot on I would say. Cob x tb is in a 150g wug and is probably on the coolish side but that is how he prefers it. He hates being even slightly too warm - itches and just generally look uncomfortable, whereas horse on box rest hates being even remotely cool, dithers, tucks up and looks tense. I think I have both ends of the scale!

Mine is in a heavyweight Mark Todd full neck turnout tonight with fleece underneath. First time he's had the fleece on as well - down to -5 tonight. He is in at night on full straw bed with rubber matting. He has a blanket clip. Just been out to check and he's about right temp.

Having said that my other one who is a fattie is naked with bib clip in stable and still plenty warm enough so it just depends on the individual horse:)
