My boy keeps pulling his front shoes off in the field (3 in 2 weeks

Someone sugested getting a set of overreach boots to turn him out in. I was just wondering if any of you knew of a make of boot that were particularly good for turning out in/ any makes to avoid?

thanks.

Isn't this so annoying! my last horse was forever pulling off his shoes, so i use to have rubber over reach boots on him all the time! you need to make sure that they are bigger than the foot, as it is when they catch the back or the side of the shoes that they pull it off, so you need to make sure the foot is completely covered.

I also tried hardy chaps which also covers the hoof, these were also very good but more expensive than over reach boots.

good luck!

i would just go for normal rubber ones, my boy wheres them in the field
i would stear clear of trizones, mine do not stay in place at all, and are very expensive

Ditto I use Roma Bell over reach boots on my boy, the ones that have the strap to do them up not velcro and so far he has managed to keep them on for 4 weeks. I got mine from Rideaway.

Thanks.

It is driving me crazy. I have spent £80 on shoes since the 25th of September!! And thats not counting the one he lost last night!!

Do i go for the pull on ones or the ones with velcro strips? I cant see the velcro staying 'sticky' for long once clogged with mud but how well do the pull on ones stay on? It may be a dull question but I've never used them before!!

i just use the bog standard velcro rubber ones for turnout, and although the velcro does get dirty etc, they stay on well, and mine last for ages even in muddy fields, worth a try
try and keep the velcro closed all the time, when off the horse and when washing the boots etc then minimal dirt, hay etc will stick in the velcro

my boy wear over reach boots 24/7 out in the field......neoprene ones make his ffet get too hot if the sun is out and tend to come off...i'd go for rubber ones with double velcro closures, if you get the pull one one you'll have a nightmare as soon as it starts to get muddy as you cant clean the feet off well enough. You have to check them regularly to ensure they are not rubbing.

Id just go for the pull on ones to be honest. I also had this (very expensive!) problem and tried the velcro ones for ease, but ended up spending a fortune replacing them as velcro loses stickiness or tehy come off in the field (all the time, grr) Ended up jsut getting the pull on ones and leaving them on all the time. I bought a size bigger than normal and jsut checked every day that they werent rubbing - never had a problem!! Good luck!

I've lost count of the number of pairs of velcro rubber ones i've gone through. The velcro either gets clogged up and is no longer sticky or he treads on the velcro and pulls it off. I am now onto the pull on ones - brilliant and cheap. Stayed put so far

I found the rubber ones do not work as well, my lad has the same problem, he currently is wearing mark todd compitition overreach boots 24/7 and has finally managed to keep both his front shoes of for five weeks!!

Before this if he went a week he did well, and that was with large rubber overeach bellboots on.

Thank you all.

The reason he is pulling them off so often is that we have just moved yards so he is trying to figure out where in the herd he fits in. This unfortunately means lots of running around and bickering!

I have decided to have his remaining shoes taken off and give him another couple of weeks to settle down.

I have bought a pair for him to wear anyway as I dont want him overreaching and cutting his heels plus when he is re-shod in a couple of weeks he can wear them out just in case he has a mad 5 mins!

Well my boy has decided to remove shoes too. Farrier on hols so dont want it happening again. Only problem I have is he manages to overreach and get his off and there broken. 3 pairs this week already
