overreach-help please!

I got a phone call this aft, when i was driving home frosm work, from the YM who had bought my boys in for me. She rang to say that solo had overreached, and shed'd hosed it off but it had been bleeding quite heavily and was sore.
i got to the yard and it had dried off(he'd been in for about 2hrs) and whilst he had his tea i had a look.
He's had worse ones, but-

* its on his mudfever leg
* its really muddy in his field
* i dont want to get mud in it etc

so, my questions for you lovely, helpful people are-

* what do i put on it? cream? powder? barrier cream?
* should i vetrap it up before i turn him out?

* why have i got a mental block about everything relating to wound care at the mo?

i've left it alone tonight, as his beds clean and deep and i thought it'd be best to let it breath.

have i done the right thing?

hum you can eith
a) let the mud get in it as this is sumtimes the best method and does help it to cover over. ()can get infected)

b) put on sudocream and the a napopy and vet wrap the foot before turn out (not adviseable if he frolicks as he could fall)

c) you could just cover it in cream before turning out. and clean on coming in..

All mothods will work.. i wouldnt get worrid about it thought.

Buy some Intrasite Gel! It's a total barrier and aids healing - forms like a 2nd skin to cover the wound. Mo had a few really nasty cuts to the bulb of her heals - this stuff worked wonders.

Depends how deep it is and where.

Don't think you want to use something like Intrasite as you'll be sealing in any nasty bacteria. If it's very muddy outside I'd either leave the neddy in, or bandage up with some melolin, a bit of fybagee for support, then bandage and tank tape round the hoof.

I would hibbi scrub it clean,and personally i wouldnt turn the horse out in mud,maybe you have a concrete yard?but if you have to you could use udder cream as a barrier

i have spoken to the YM and he'll be going out in the starvation paddock tomoro- as we dont have any fatties on the yard (the fatties owners deny that their osses are fat) there is plenty of grass in it.
the only thing that slightly worries me, loobie_lou, is the fact that he's that prone to mf anything that gets in will turn it to the dreaded mf.

Absolutely agree!!

Had this on numerous occasions from the vet for DEEP wounds,it actually draws out any infection that is in the wound!!!!
However,an overreach will always bleed a huge amount as it is the bulb of the heel and blood flow is sooo active at the base of the leg!My lad had an overeach(also suffers mud fever),i cleaned up with hebi scrub and put on purple spray(any antiseptic spray will do),if you do this for the first few days of his coming in you should be ok as the leg is drying overnight and no nasties are getting in from the field(just respray with antiseptic in the morn)!!I wouldnt recommend blocking with a barrier cream as it needs to breathe to heal!!
