Earlier this year my horse was out of work due to an injury to her poll area which our Physio believed was from either pulling back or from banging her head in the field. She had a swollen poll and was stiff down her neck.
Fortunately after a lot of treatment and time off she has come through this but came out the other end with virtually no muscle and had lost a lot of condition. She is a 17 year old 15.3hh Anglo Arab who is very sensitive and difficult to keep weight on and has an extreme aversion to being kept in a stable and therefore lives out all year round.
Since her injury I have spent a lot of time and money trying to change things around for her, she is now fed Blue Chip Original, Calm and Condition Cubes, Alfa-Oil, Dodson & Horrell's Mobility as a joint supplement, and garlic and linseed oil. She also had no shoes on but to help her balance I have put front shoes on her which seems to have helped her immensley.
I originally bought her back into work doing a lot of lunging and loose schooling with no tack on to try and strengthen her and have since started riding her doing a lot of work to stretch her down long and low through her shoulders. I have since started picking her up and working her into a contact and as she has developed have been doing some pole work as she has become quite lazy with her feet.
Over the last month I have noticed she has started over-reaching which I can hear and see visibly. I have since started schooling her with overreach boots but when loose schooling her the other day she has caught herself above her overreach boot. I have had this horse for 11years and she has never overreached before and as a younger horse we did BSJA to Newcomers. Would there be any reason why she has suddenly started doing this? One explanation I have had is that she is feeling more supple and free due to the joint supplement. Any other suggestions?
Any advice would be gratefully received!
