Hello everyone. I'm going to be overseeding in the spring, and I've had a look at different seed mixtures but there are SO MANY. And the price varies considerably. Does anyone have any recommendations? (a mix without yarrow).

Also, I've only done it by hand before, and a terrible job I did of that! Well, I used my feed scoop and just flung it 🤦‍♀️. So I was looking for something a bit better! The field is flat, but it's still a field, not a lawn, so are the little cheaper wheelie ones probably not up to the task? Am I better with a hand held one? I have about 1acre to overseed.

Obviously I'd rather have a quad and a little pull seed spreader, but I have horses, so I have no money. 🙃

Thanks !!

not sure if this is of any help but if you buy in round hay bales that you keep on pallets they drop loads of seeds underneath. I buy in hay that has been tested for my ems ponies so know it is a suitable grass for them to eat. Basically, every time I finish a bale I sweep all the seeds up and spread by hand over the bare patches. It works a treat at repairing my fields for free. I do this all year round so that the areas that get really poached in winter all recover too.

I haven't used grass seed from this company but have bought other products from them for our garden. I have found them to be helpful should you need to ask about products. https://www.progreen.co.uk/seed/paddocks/horse-pony/amvista-horse-pony-mix-over-seeding-mix-10-kg/ They also have spreaders for seed and fertilisers.

I avoid ryegrass seed for horse paddocks. There are seed mixtures available that are specifically for equine grazing. Ryegrass is ok for gateways because its hard-wearing.

There are other non ryegrass seed mixes available. I was giving a link to the site and using an example of a smaller amount of seed. They cater for horse and pony paddocks as well as agriculture and gardening products.

I'm having trouble locating non ryegrass seed at the moment, seen some on a Cotswolds seed catalogue but it's £96 a bag:oops: I have a cheap push along spreader, cost about £70, it does o.k. I would happily have paid a bit more but there was not much between this one and £400+models.

I’ve bought from here before. They do a range of paddock grass mixes with or without rye grass.

I just spread mine by hand. It didn’t take long.
