Ok sort of following on from a previous thread ....

I really like the look of this chap and it has got me thinking about my next horse ....

Now I've never been that fond of 'cobs' (no offence) just look at Sol .. she is my 'type' (yes a wonkey pikey pony!)

Ok back to the point ..

Pro's/Con's of 'oversized' Sec. D's ?

Would showing be a No-no ? Or is the no upper height limit on Sec.D's ?

Nothing against them so long as they are nicely put together. Most that I've seen arent well put together and look a bit lump-ish.
This one looks ok bar being a bit short in the neck and having an upright shoulder. Rider looks a bit tense and perched and why is he strapped down in 2nd pic?!

The line good as gold to ride,Walk trot and His canter is a Little unbalanced but his heart and soul is init. If he hasn't been turned out He can be green, although never naughty just giddy
makes me think that they may be an necessary thing

I just want something a little less high maintenance than Sol but I need the height .

Have seen some lovely IDx and Cob crosses but this chap has really caught my eye ...

That's right no upper height limit. Welsh Pony and Cob Society website confirms.

So are they just not 'fashionable' in the show ring ?

far too horsey for me.......i personally think that althought there is no upper height limit on the D's, that once they get above 15.1 they lose the pony "type" and start to look like hunters, often the bigger ones make cracking sports horses, being lighter of bone than the true to type cobs. For me the clue is in the word cob, and i like a D to be a leg on each corner chunky type of animal, with a neat pony head.

There may be no upperheight limit but they do lose "type" over about 15.2, I've not seen many over this do that well in the show ring. Technically a cob (of any type) should be around 15hh, think who they're originally marketed at, less fit, heavier "townies" who perhaps didn't ride that often.

I don't like the way he's stood like an american horse in the in hand pic, or the way he's strapped down in one of them. Could be a diamond in the rough however for a nice alrounder.

I don't like them, but just my opinion. I have a full up 14.2hh sec D and IMO that's about the perfect size, or at least no bigger than 15hh. They are supposed to be a pony, not a big horse, so I don't understand having them so big.

Must admit I don't like the one in the ad. To repeat Boss's comment, why is he strapped down in second pic? I think he's too light for a good section D, just looks a bit too fine for my liking. Don't get me wrong, I loathe the fat heifers you see in the show ring more but I like to see a Sec D with more presence than that. And more of a pony. IMO they lose the pony face and characteristics when they are so big.

Having said that, it depends what you want it for. If you want it to show then I don't like it because it's not traditional enough. If you want it to be a general RC allrounder type then you probably won't go far wrong, they usually have a hell of a jump on them. Wouldn't say they were low maintenance though, mine is a really good doer and needs really careful management to keep him at a reasonable weight. Plus he's nuts

I know this horse, Just very green, thought about it as a project but i have 3 projects in at the moment and can't take another

I phrased the 'low maintenance' wrong - it should really read - not-so-accident-prone-than-my-stupid-ISH-that-is-currently-baffling-the-vets

Just want something I can do RC WH/SJ/ODE etc until the cripple is back up and running , and something to bring on over the summer

I don't like them, they don't seem to be true to type and IMO are getting to fine. I know of some 15.2 plus that are being used for jumping and dressage and are doing well. As for showing it depends what the judge likes, I think once they are over 15H they loose the essence of a good welsh cob and become just another horse.

Hmm. Not so sure about the diamond in the rough, look at his wither to nose profile, then wither to dock, not a fan. Plus I have tarnished memories lol of my beloved old horse who had a nosey allllmost that pink.

If you want him as a horse he looks fine, I too would want to know why he strapped down and also what he does when he asn't been out, no harm and going and trying him if he will do the job you want him for.

If you want to do M and M WH I wouldn't personally as I don't think he is a good example of breed, but would probably be ok as you say if he'll jump for straight WH, wuld depend on what level though.

not a fan of that particluar one- he looks like of bone for his size and general confirmation not really up to scratch. all a bit upright and straight through the leg for me.

i like oversized D's if they retain all of the looks of a D and i knew a cracking 16.1hh one who looks like a proper section D, just a bit bigger.

The larger Welsh D's aren't usually true to type.
I think this was always going to be the problem with no upper height limit for the breed.
All the oversize D's I know are lovely horses but not suitable for the show ring.

The "no upper height limit" on Sec D's is absolutely ridiculous.

As others have said, once they are over 15.2 they don't even look like Welsh Cobs, losing the pony sized head and the movement of a "proper" sized 14.2.

It beats me how anyone can judge over-sized cobs against "normal" sized ones in the same class.

I LOVE Sec D's- they are my sort of horses completely..

However i like to see them no bigger than 15hh and tend to agree with the other few that they do loose the whole Sec D 'thing' once they move into the horse height range.

Hes pretty though.

I say YAY

If you don't want to do County standard showing then you will be fine. I show mine at local shows and as long as you don't mind one day being first and another last depending on the judge then you will have great fun. If you want a horse that can do anything you won't go far wrong with a Section D. Not sure about the one you are looking at but don't be put off with one that is 15.2, mine is
