When riding in a group, how do you overtake another horse and rider? If I am going at a faster pace than another do I work on the outside or the inside track?
Slowest on inside - off the track.
Lateral work has right of way over normal work and in movements if u cross paths walk stops for trot & canter trot stops for canter etc etc.
If you are going to come up behind and over take voice that you are, or cough to make your presence known.
I was taught to circle around and slot back in as well.
Except for one day when the youngster i was on got so frustrated in the group trot he threw he biggest hissy fit iv ever experienced. He did bucks which resembled handstands the whole length of the school. Needless to say I hit the deck!
Circle away so you don't over take and slot in where you've got more space room.
I've always thought an been told it's the height of rudeness just to run up the inside at a faster pace, it's also a pretty sure fire way to send someones horse into orbit.
My daughter attended Hadlow College last year doing her BHS stages and she was taught fastest pace on the outside track , if you are walking stay on the inside and when you pass another going the opposite way always pass left to left (shoulder that is)
Or failing that u could ask "ok to come past?" then at least you have been courteous!
