I have a 6 year old 15.1hh Irish cob which I am trying to smarten up. He is currently a little overweight and has a lack of topline. I was wondering, in addition to exercise, what feeds I can give him to assist this process. I have tried Blue Chip feed balancer previously but he just fizzed up on this, I was thinking of trying Top Spec Feed balancer or/and some sort of topline conditioning cube. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can feed to condition him without the fizz?

If he is a little overweight but lacks top line then you should be looking at increasing his work. To build topline he need to work correctlt. Lunging with something like a Pessoa will help as will correct training.

I would work him harder to get the belly off and help with topline, once the weight has dropped I would use Baileys Lo cal

My trad cob gets Showshine chaff and Lo Cal....... She loves the cherry flavour of the chaff

how about trying some work????? if he is currently overweight as you say the last thing you want to be giving him is conditioning feeds......topline is the name for the correct muscle structure and this onlt comes with proper work, feedwise just some low calorie chaff and a vit/min supplement will be sufficient, make sure your cob works through from behind in a proper outline and isn't allowed to just slop along with it's nose on the floor..... i ahve an overwieght cob who is just starting to show signs of improvement in muscle tone and structure, after 6 weeks of work and strapping, it will take time but is worth it in the end.

Hi Cobstar. I have a chunky (ahem) cob who is 20+ and only has 1 eye. He was skinny and depressed when I bought him 2 years ago and I put him on Blue Chip original and he's absolutely blossomed on that plus Dr Green (as my fabuloso YO calls good old GRASS!). I'm surprised if Blue Chip original caused a fizz as I always thought it was mostly vits and mins? Certainly my boy didn't get fizzy though I'm not sure "fizzy" is in his dictionary! Good luck!

once again baileys lo cal!!!
we not only had our cob ridden all the time when being shown. but also brought her in with a handfull of hay for 2 hours a day because she bloats out on the grass and looks even fatter than she is.

My welsh d has been on lo cal for years and it's fab it's conditioning but with no calories, you only need 2 cups a day maybe with a handful of chaff and thats it.Even if he's in work you don't need anymore than that as it has all the vits/mins etc that he needs,it also has stuff in it for healthy feet/skin etc

mine was getting chunky and i bring him in either all day one day or all day every other day with hay. he is ridden 6 days a week (long rides) and people have started commenting this last week about how wonderful he is looking, slimmer, muscular and handsome as hell. bring yours in (ideally with some company), keep him busy and out as much as possible and he will soon change shape. (i am naughty tho and feed treats but he works hard for them).........
