overweight horses

Switch to whatever feed his on to just a vit/min supplement and some low calorie chaff, soak all hay and work horse more often.

And don't forget to make everything very slowly so he adapts. If you remove all his hard food and replace it with the supplements/chaff without giving him some time to adjust you'll be in trouble.

Mine is!
Lives out 24/7, only 3 yrs. Luckily had the grass grazed right down by a herd of cows, and I've restricted the 'patch'. So far her weight hasn't changed to ''more'' which is good. I'm just watching her like a hawk, not much more I can really do at this stage. PS, she has just been backed very lightly so we have ventured out on the lanes a few times. - my aim is that it would help a bit!!

I've been there. Soak hay, up work, cut down/out feed, muzzle or restrict grazing if needed, although didn't do all this at once. Started first just by cutting down then out feed & increasing workload

Been there , I got 200 kilos off my OHs ID.
I built a long strip it's not quite a track but it's much more than a grazing strip
I exercised twice a day concerntrating on marching out walking and hill work when he was very fat .
I fed a min and vit supp and a little high quality protein and chopped straw , I just put the straw straight on the ground in his strip.
It took time two years really but it's made him into a different horse.

This year I put in a track and recently started feeding 50% oat straw mixed into their hay. It's working wonders for my fatties

I have managed to get 50 kg off my Sec. D in 11 months. Cut down his hay ration (he is out at night now, in summer) and gets about 5 lbs of hay a day. He is now out in the same sized field with a companion - so they are keeping the grass right down (only a paddock) - it was strip grazed in spring when the grass was coming through. He doesn't get more than a handful of feed anyway.

It has taken a long time, but he was fairly obese last summer (it just got away from me and I didn't notice). He looks really well, now.

After she has her abcess I have been keeping her in over night and in in the day haveing 4.6kg soaked hay. Her paddock is resricted. And seems to be going fine.

Trouble is Yo has told me that once her foot is better i am not allowed to keep her in anymore shes got to be out 24/7. So was wondering what else I can do. Its not only though to help her weight Ive been trying work on her having better feet. I needed to cut the sugar out.

Anyway my ramblings. So loosing weight and haveing good feet can happen on 24/7 grass. Thanks for you replys.

Of course she can have good feet and good weight when out 24/7!

Can you mow her paddock to keep the grass short? I personally hate grazing muzzles for everyday use as the horses get frustrated and I've seen way to many rubs. Also, if you spread the clippings in a sunny dry place until it dries and then pack it you'll end up with wonderful chaff to use in the winter!

My pony has got overweight quicky due to the grass starting to come through and he is now in a grazing muzzle combined with more work. He is wearing his grazing muzzle 24/7, not ideal but need to get his weight under control and it means he can live out with his friends.

I think it will take a long time for him to slim down to a decent weight though. They seem to lose quite a bit to start off and then get stuck on a plateau.
