So this was Owens first ODE for 2 years, as last year he had off for his back op and then it took a while to get him comfortable and right afterwards.

Dressage he warmed up really super, he was sooo calm ( put like a triple dose of calmer in his feed last night and this morning- at last something that works!) he did a lovely relaxed test although he could have had more push from behind and more go ( he really was very calm!) but anyway he got 27, mostly 7 and 8's, one 9, and one 6 ! So that put us in the lead for a while.... was thrilled as had lost confidence in his dressage a bit after a beastly judge marked him harshly the other week - so I guess that after today he must be working vaguely correctly after all....!

Showjumping- no idea what would happen, firstly the first fence was purple and Owen just doesnt do purple ! but he hardly looked at it. He got very, very strong when entering the arena ( he finds the atmo a bit much!)The whole round was at about 30 mph, it was very messy and untidy, but he was flying them !! He tried it on with attempting to run out at a *scary* filler but just managed to get him over it at a v. sharp angle... thought I'd had about 4 fences down - he'd rattled a fair few, but no, he went clear!!

So at this point it seemed like we were in the lead, but they still had a few more dressage marks to put up. XC everyone was having a godzillion time faults, there was this ridicolously twisty long bit up and down hills through the woods, you couldnt do more than walk really at some points, so set out from the start box quite fast to try and keep up on the time. He flew it all beautifully, dithered at the drop fences and at the ditch he looked at it and went;- 'oh-my-god-its-absolutely-horrific- ok im going into panic mode!' but just managed to get over them without penalties.
Anyway once out of the woods he was galloping the fences brilliantly, had a steep step up with a bounce to a rail and a rail, he's never done it before, but genuinely scrambled over.
All was going great untill.....the second last fence, the water jump... so it wasnt even a fence! Just two parts of a stream to cross!
Went through the first part apprehensively but ok, and the second part- murky water, running current- hissing noises- and he just froze. Wouldnt go near it. So that was that - big fat E !!

and only the last fence left to jump as well..

So tantalising, waters the one thing he is normally ok on-but I *suppose*, from dear Owen's point of view, that it was very very scary and that there were evil witches hiding underneath the murky water waiting to jump out and bite him! But they almost took the water jump out alltogether because the water level was almost too high after all the rain.....so todays the one day that I regret not having more rain!

The ground was abs fab by the way, it had just the right cut to it...

So no rosette for Owen today.. but still very very pleased!! I knew I shouldve done more XC schooling with him before hand and he had only been XC twice this year before today. So just got to get him out schooling more.

Hopefully there will be another chance to try and get it all right!!

Oh went back to look at the scores later, someone got 26 dressage, so we wouldve been 2nd

Omg he looks fantastic! What a wonderful pic

Well done for the dr and sj and most of the xc- what a promising start!
Moon did exactly the same freeze at SL so I share your pain but your day sounds really positive

What a positive report I!! Shame about the water, but overall it sounds like you had a really constructive day. A bit of xc schooling and you'll be in the ribbons next time. I know how hard it is to have a talented horse with a medical problem and I'm thrilled you've both completed (all be it nearly!) you're first ODE or 2 years. Well done! What are your plans next? Entered for anything else?

The picture looks fabulous!!
grin.gif

Doh - these horses can give you eventers such a hard time can't they! But fantastically well done for stress and SJ (I bet you felt really good) and bad luck for the water. I'm sure you'll have a win before long (weather permitting

)

Thanks Boss! Yes I am really thrilled and positive about today. He is a tricky little bugger at times but he know's he's talented and handsome so that attitude does not help things!

V.pleased with the pic because the pics of him jumping at his very last event in '05,( before his op and when his back was really bad) were terrible, he looked so hollow and tense over the fences and legs were dangling everywhere. So its really interesting to compare his technique and jump now!

So,...got any ideas on how to de-frost a frozen horse very quickly

Lol! Absolutely no idea, I was stuck, didnt know what to do! It was so obviously not to do with the jump but, like you, I was in between a and b elements so they had no choice but to elim me. I'm thinking maybe blinkers and ear plugs

Thank you Gabby and Shaab ! I am soo so delighted with my naughty little man - I thought there was a fair chance we wouldnt get past that first fence in the showjumping, nor did I think he would get down the drops ( one was big!)so to have got that far I have to be very pleased..
smile.gif

The best thing is that he truely loves his jumping- just had no idea wether he would want to jump again after his op although his surgeon always had a lot of faith in him.

Next one is Little Mattingley Intro - he likes that course ! then Aston Intro, then toying with the idea of doing two out of Brockenhurst/Highclere and Goring PN's ....

Yes thats the plan- we must now go to an event where theres been so much rain that all the water jump levels are too high and are thus taken out !
smile.gif

Thanks was very pleased...espec with him being so carefull in the SJ as that seemed a bit of a fluke!!

What a thrill to read this, okay im gonna ignore the E mark, everything else is just blooming brilliant, and WHAT A PICTURE!

I I am so pleased for you, you and O both deserve to do well, with what youve been through in recent years.

Lets hope this will be the start of big things for you two.

Well done.

Come to Brock and see me!!
grin.gif

Well done you! I was supposed to be going today but we had floods at both ends of our lane with abandoned cars and could not possibly get through even in the lorry. So feeling pretty peed off!

V I am quite embarrassed to admit it- but I was in tears after the SJ not because I was upset but because I was just so happy to be there with a happy fit Owen at last, who really wanted to work for me
smile.gif
The best thing is that he is feeling stronger and better every week now ! Then to get that pic I was even happier as its real proof that he is feeling well...

Are you at Mattingley again this weekend?

Lol - the horse looks good and rider looks scary ! Thank you tho!

Shaab-right I will try and get to Brockers!!
grin.gif

Flabradary- soo sorry to hear that you couldnt get there

frown.gif
I am sorry, wouldnt wish that on anyone !

I am not at all suprised, i was quite teary just reading your report!

Im at Mattingley on Friday, 16th to go! please come along if you can and say HI
smile.gif

We are then at Aston and Burnham after that, then prob Goring and BCA to finish, we'll go cubbing after that then he can have a well earned holiday.

Unless of course he qualifies on friday *pigs might fly*

Do you think you might be running in the morning on Friday? Am def coming up then to walk the course before doing Intro on Sunday,it would be great to watch you both at last!!

Sounds like a good program youve got lined up there for Snoops! Am definately going back to Goring I think !!

Def in the morning, Im number 16 in section A.
Have you seen my section!!!!!

I think that will be plenty of events for him this season that will be 11 he will have done. Plus i want him to do a couple of days cubbing with the Bicester, and may do the hunter trials too which is in October just down the road from here.

I want him back ready to BSJA from November so we will go from there. I was hoping to pop him up to Novice at the end of the season, but im in no rush tbh.
Plus today we were talking about doing some BD on him, so we might be quite busy lol (Im going to be seriously broke).

Goring will be good to be going back too, you had a good run there, and theyve soften the course slightly, but brought some new fences in. Ie skinnies on a curve line and made the corner more friendly. Plus the last few fences are all new.

Be lovely to see you on friday if you can make it, think SAF is coming too

Love your pic, what a good boy! I was there today too, and thought the water might spook a few - at least it happened at the end rather than the beginning, and sounds like theres plenty of potential for some clear rounds
laugh.gif

Super I will see you there on Friday morning!
smile.gif
Golly just had a look at your section
blush.gif
but dont be worried cos you guys can hold your own with the best of them!

Think that looks like a good program...will set you up nicely for Novice next year!! doesnt it just cost a fortune to produce a event horse
frown.gif
its not just the events its all the stuff you have to do to get the horse doing well at the events! agh!

Goring sounds great! Haha Owens only XC clear in his life!!
tongue.gif
although the one fence I had real problems with was those two narrow fences on a curve about two fences before the corner.... Was it just me or was it virtually impossible to get to the second one?! I dont know maybe I hadnt found a good line through it!

Thank you all you guys!

Jxd- just about to read your report! Wasnt that water horrid? although the one horse I watched go through it hardly noticed it was there!

Well done, you can't really blame him for stopping if it was noisy water, it may just have been a crocodile making the racket for all he knew!
What a good start though, you must be pleased regardless of the elimination.
I reckon put a few holes in a hosepipe and run it across the front of his door so he has to step over it for a few days and he will ignore it next time..
The pic looks brilliant!

wow well done, that was a lovely report to read!

all 3 phases sound excellent especially the dressage and sj, shame about that last water, but it wasnt just a plain old pond type thing was it!

gorgeous photo as well
