For those with your own yard and full time jobs - do you usually do everything yourself ? Do you ever pay anyone to help (if so what jobs) especially during the winter?

Really struggled last year.....

I do everything myself, with the exception of proper farming jobs, ie hedge cutting, harrowing, rolling and fencing.
All the feeding, care and exercising are my jobs.
It is hard work though, especially when the weather is doing everything to work against you.

I don't but am thinking about this option for the future!

If I do go this route, I am very much hoping I could give free DIY to one or 2 stables in return for help with my horses. I don't know how achieveable this is but the main thing is I don't want to be tied to my horses 24/7. Other option is to investigate a freelance groom.

I'm the same as OliveOyl - do everything except the "proper" farming jobs. I've got four of my own (was 5 until a month ago). However, I've got one HUGE advantage in that they live out all year, so there's no mucking out to do, and if they don't get ridden every day, then it's no big deal because they've not been stuck in stables without exercise.

Admittedly, I couldn't do it if mine were stable kept.

No, we tried that one winter. Gave the lady, who came with references, strict instructions about the order in which they should go out and that she could lead them in either halter (which we usually use) or a headcollar. She also mucked out 4 boxes. We had builders in at the time, with their equipment left around the yard. We found that every week-end we had to re-establish basic manners, such as not leaving the box until invited to. Then we found out that the horses were wandering across the yard on their own. An accident waiting to happen! We didn't repeat the experience, although we were very grateful when a neighbour offered to put them out in the snow last year. That meant that the oldie didn't have to be out for 12 hours while we were at work. We deep-litter shavings and do a proper muckout at the weekend. There are 2 of us to 3 (used to be 4) horses. A friend has her pony here atm, so with luck she will be able to put them out some days next winter.

I have two horses on a yard 5 miles from home, no other horses or horsey people there. I work full time as a nurse and OH works away Mon-Fri. Horses live out 24/7 in the summer, so go up twice a day and poo pick, fly spray and check them. In the winter they come in at night. Horses are used to me coming and going at odd times, in the winter I bring them in in the dark and they are used to the head torch. It's hard work but I much prefer own yard to livery and horses seem much more settled.

ive just re started a business and was working 9-5 plus i have 5 horses in on sales livery, the yard i rent and it needed work .. up until recenty i was doing both .. and itwas killing me (great for weight loss though)

before the business i had upto 3 horses that were mine and worked full time. the winters were the hard art but then it was a quick muck out put to bed so was at home at decent times.
