What would you do? I have a ongoing problem with my back and seem to be coping with mucking out, grooming etc but can't cope with riding and don't know weather I ever will. Thing is iv got a ex racer who's young and could go on and do stuff but what if he got in the wrong hands? I hear so many horror stories that makes me think maybe keeping him would be best as he don't seem to care if he's ridden or not. The others I'm not worried about as they are older but feel this lad could do more. Really don't want to loan because off problems iv had before.
What would you do?

I'd advertise him but be careful who you actually sell him to. Put off anybody you don't think he'll suit and then only sell him when someone comes to see him who makes you feel like you are doing the right thing for him by letting him go to them.

I doubt the horse cares about being ridden. If you feel he really should be though if finances aren't an issue could you find someone to share or part loan where he is?

well ive been in this position and sold a wonderful horse that ive regretted parting with ever since! my back went so bad i collapsed and nearly ended up in a wheelchair, and had to have emergency surgery . didnt ride for a long while but am now enjoying little hacks on my new schoolmaster and loving it! dont sell unless your certain its the right thing to do!

I agree with Flame, take your time to find the right home. Horses like to have a job to do.

Horses don't give a toss about "jobs." They want grazing, water, a safe, quiet environment, companionship. If you can afford to keep him, do just that. The more I read about selling, loaning, sharing...I've reached a point where there's a little voice saying "trust no one!" If it happens in future and the right new home comes along with people you know and trust...

That's what I would do and am doing right now because of a very bad back.

Good luck.

If you enjoy looking after him why not find a decent rider for him. That way you control his welfare, he gets a job to do and if he starts going out to parties then you get something back from that aswell.
Its pretty much how I do all my riding, either schooling, exercising or competing horses for owners. No money changes hands either way. :D

Thanks guys.
A lot off you have said what/how I feel about welfare. It's the horror stories you hear and if he got into the wrong home I would be gutted.
No I don't mind paying for just pets as I love them all and have huge pleasure out off seeing them looking good and just enjoying life, the money side off it don't bother me as I love them all.
I feel he should do a job but than think he's had 8 years off racing and he's put weight on and is so calm even my 10 yr old handles him daily he isn't getting hot up by not working at all.
Iv tried to get a sharer to ride him but there is nobody in our area at all which is a shame.
I'm more than happy to just provide a home to insure their well being but feel I'm stopping him from doing something.

Course not. All of us who either aren't Olympic standard riders & can't afford to pay one either don't utilise our horses full potential in one way or another. Just enjoy him, that's why we all have them.

I vote you keep him and enjoy him. You could always do some inhand things instead just to keep life interesing if you want? Anything from showing to horse agility to clicker stuff etc.

I think horses like a job aswell. Unless maybe you have acres and acres of interesting varied land maybe.
I would advertise for a sharer/rider if financially your in a position to keep. Could work perfectly and give someone a fabulous oppertunity

if the horses are happy and you are happy then it's sorted:) horses don't need a job to do, their job is to eat, sleep and poo;)
i know you say you have tried with no success looking for a sharer but have you looked through the wanted ads on the horsey sites, thats how i found both the girls who come and ride my horses, i don't do it for financial reasons but purely because i get as much joy out of watching them progressing with the horses as i do out of riding. I've been lucky that the girls i have found are very keen but just can't afford horses of their own so they really enjoy coming over to mine and getting the kind of experience they can't get at the riding schools;) (poo picking and general slavery lol...... joke;))

I agree with others that he about riding he prob won't care :)
I just wanted to add you always hear the bad stories of loans never the good ones. My last horse due to my circumstances was loaned out, he was looked after amazing, he had the best of everything. She offered to buy him and while it was not my intention to sell he was in a great home were he remains now :D
People always talk about the bad loans which puts people off

Where a bouts are you? There's some good peopl on here looking for rides. If you get pleasure from owning him and can afford it I would keep him. He's probably helping your back by keeping you active also
