I have always had a desire to own one of the drafts or draft crosses, I am at the moment drooling over a certain belgian Trekpaard, I also love Fany du Champs Ardenner.

My YO bless him has had a bad experience with one who decided it was going to rub its backside on the back of its stable bringing the whole thing down around it so is not at all keen to the point of telling me that I can go ahead and buy one as long as I also buy the Railway sleepers and hire the digger to build it a solid stable with deep foundations....I think he is only half joking as well:-)))

So your opinions and experiences please to use as ammo to at least open it up for debate with him.

My Ardennes x is hardy, sturdy and cheap to feed. Rarely needs rugs. Doesnt need shoes. And is spectacularly low maintenance. What's not to love about that?

I had a 14hh Fell cross who demolished almost all of my post and rail fencing rubbing on it, the only reason the stables stayed up is because they are in a steel framed barn... although there were times when I thought they might not survive.

I see you yard owner's point... but it's not just the big horses who demolish expensive stuff with their itches :D Maybe it's worth mentioning that to him?

Also of course, itchy tails can be due to worms, or can just need a good wash. If your horse is clean and wormed (which I'm sure yours are by the way :)) then there shouldn't be so much chance of a problem. Perhaps you could appeal to his vain side and mention that? "as the horses are so well managed in terms of worming" etc etc?

Good luck :)

Poldark - :-))))

His main point is that once they know their strength they will just walk through things, bless him he needs educating.

I keep trying the yes but can you imagine how much fun it will be working with one to make it as feather light to ride as one of the quarters and how great it will be to be enter it in the Western competitions....this is appealing to his bloody minded side lol

ive got a nice big irish draught gelding and nothing can beat his tempremant, draught horses are best for me as i like horses who are slightly chunky so that i have some support underneath me, compared to riding say a TB i just dont feel secure, but thats just me. I have always had draughts or at least whatever horse i have had they have been draught crosses
