Hi Guys,
Advice needed so I have a horse I part own with my MIL. We have had the horse 10 years for the last 7 she has been the most involved with the horse riding & care etc . I would do the horse if she away/ needs help or wants to hack . Basically she has the start of dementia gets confused a bit but other than that is fine and the horse keeps her going.

The horse came in from the field 6 weeks ago lame she does live with a herd . MIL mentioned it after about 5 days . I suggested to call the vet as she was getting worse. The vets came a few days later . They aren’t known for being the best vets locally but she used them a while and is loyal to them. Usual vet arrived watch’s the horse trot up felt it’s legs . She just went put it on box rest and call me in a week if not better . MIL said this wasn’t possible as the horse would go nuts . She said put it in a side pen then . She left . One week later no better getting worse she called them . The vet said keep leaving it on restricted turnout . After 5 days she was worse so MiL rang again she came out did never blocks on the yard didn’t find it . She said she would come back in a week and to keep restricted turnout.

The day of the appointment the practice rang saying the Equine vet was on holiday and there had been a mistake and the other option was the farm vet who couldn’t come for 8 days or to wait until the vet was back in two weeks . She decided to wait .

The vet is back today and has rang she said as the horse is no better she will be back to nerve block Tuesday .

Talking to MiL and Her Yo (yard owner also thinks the vet is useless ) . The vet never suggested Bute for a horse that’s clearly not comfortable . I also know from past experience that there are drugs/ calmer that can help a horse through box rest . I am going to be there for the vet Tuesday and I will make it known I am not happy about the situation.

I have discussed with MiL about using my vets who are equine specialists . She keeps saying they are expensive they £20 more for a call out ?. The horse is registered with my vets as she is on my account . I think part of it is down to MiL getting stressed with changed . But I am not concerned for the horse welfare what should I do ?

I have some Bute I am very tempted to give her some until Tuesday !

Thanks in advance

I would definitely get my own vet out, i do have zero tolerance with 'incompetent vets' (mine are used to me!) could you offer to pay the extra?
Also add up the cost of the 'wasted' vet bills she has already without a diagnosis.
I would give a bute just to see if it helps, the horse is suffering, then you can tell the vet it does help. Make sure its out of the system so the vet can see the true picture though.

Haha me too it drive me mad if my car was broke 6 weeks I wouldn’t be happy never mind a living animal . My vets are used to me to? One i know from competing she is a friend as well as my vet . When they take on a new vet/have a student she always sends them to me as she knows I am on it and will ask a 1000 questions and don’t take poor answers . I don’t get why they think 6 weeks with no answers is acceptable I would expect it be diagnosed in a few day ! I have offered to pay the difference she is still reluctant ? . I will try the Bute too thanks

I would bute her for now and try and get your own vet out as soon as you can.

How lame is she just wondering if it could be laminitis?

This was my thought as she is a happy hacker and sometimes the horse gets fat . I am rather experienced with laminitis and don’t think it is . It seems to me to be higher up in the shoulder . ?

Could it be a foot abcsess?

My first experience with a hoof abscess had me thinking my horse had broken his shoulder. I think, since the horse is partially yours and partially MIL's, maybe it's time that your vet was called. You don't have to try to convince her, just apologise later. Say you thought it for the best.

It’s odd that the vet didn’t prescribe bute anyway. I’d see what a course of that does and phone your vet. If you part own the horse you could perhaps share the cost?

I would speak to your vet as she is obviously uncomfortable and the situation with MIL vets has gone on long enough.
If they can come out ask them about giving her bute, they may well say no as it may mask the problem they are looking for.
