I don't mean to offend any normal YO's who may read this, but have a few questions;
1. Why do people become all-knowing when they buy a livery yard (even if previously, they've never owned a horse and worked in a travel agents, for example).
2. Why do their horses need better grazing/larger stables/more hay than anyone elses (LOL)?
3. Why do they expect you to fix fencing/treat wooden stables, help them stonepick schools etc? In a hotel you wouldn't be asked to paint your room....
4. Why do they become gradually insane over time? E.g. one said 'Why do all these people (her liveries) keep coming here and disturbing me when it's my home (she meant the yard)'!

1 'cos they think ownership confers a god-like status

2. - because tbh the YO is coughing for all the facilities and possibly does the liveries to subsidise own horse(s) - so of course own horses will take priority - it is only human and if you were in same position you might find yourself doing the same

3. if those efforts are in the discounted livery contract then you've signed to do it - if there is no contract and you are paying full price for the level of livery you have then you shouldn't be doing those tasks - unless of course you are riding in the school and notice a big stone - note it and remove it for the benefit of all horses (but then why should a school have stones in it ??)

4 the cheeky answer is that the liveries themselves drive the YO insane of course ;-)

they probably spent years with nobody listening to them, so this is their shot at power....!
if you dont want the hassle, dont have the liveries...!

I agree !!!

I must say ive owned horses since i was 4yo and we do all the poo picking and fix fencing etc etc the liveries do nothing !!

but yes my horses do get preferential treatment and i dont think there is one person on here that wouldnt do that !!

though last year when a field livery had to come in i put my own horse in a small tiny stable for a few weeks and let them have mine !!!

Replies to this from YO's should be interesting

It is a bit different to most of the UK yards I've seen. These Boarders are more pets than anything else. I don't see my owners for weeks on end, they come for half an hour, usually with friends, to pat their horses, have a chat and then they go.

They can do what they like, if there is a problem they know where I am, likewise, I treat their horses the same as I treat my own, any problems and I act accordingly and inform the owners.

Hmmmm, preferential treatment. Well, the mare and foal have the paddocks that can be seen from the house, that's about it, they are my paddocks. The others, Boarders go with my horses in whatever pasture is best and are moved around as I choose. No one has asked for individual turnout yet. I don't expect Boarders to do anything and they don't expect to be asked, maintenance, feeding etc is what they pay me for, anyway, I like harrowing etc. If I was at a yard I would expect the owner to have first choice of stables and fields.

Stables, well, apart from the foaling box all the others are the same size so none are any better or worse than any other. A stable doesn't come with the agreement anyway, I have spares and if they are needed then they are used. If Boarders want a stable reserved then they pay for it.

Absolutely the only thing I am grouchy about is my No Dogs ruling.

I wouldn't set myself up as an expert but I know a heck of a lot more than my Owners do, I know their horses better than they do too.

we are yo as well and we are nothing like that thankfully !!!
mind you we have yard for 40 years +++
all our horses ar more like pets as well and we do the fencing and the ragwort and the muck spreading and well everything bar looking after the horse(diy) unless they go on holiday then we mite look after them at no extra cost i hasten to add !!
