Owning horses and dealing with severe arachnophobia?

I was driving down a dual carriageway this morning when I saw a huge spider clamber out from behind the sunvisor and amble towards me. i'm usually fine with spiders, but that gave me the creeps.:o Had to stop- and then couldn't find it. Just going out to fill the car with conkers.

Puddock - facing the fear has to be done in a specific and controlled way. I am a CBT therapist and have treated quite a few phobias (although a lot of people don't come forward for treatment). When the fear is particularly strong then a starting point may be a picture of a spider at the far end of the room, or even the word written on a piece of paper. Then exposure is built up systematically. It can be done very quickly if working with a therapist, which I would encourage you to do if wanted to try and conquer it.

I do, and it's something I will definitely approach in the future, but unfortunately I can't afford to do so at the moment. I don't think the NHS will be willing to cover it for me, nor would I expect it to, I suppose ;-)

I'm not particularly fussed about spiders SINCE owning horses.
This one gave me a bit of a shock though...

You could ask another GP at your surgery maybe? Based on how you described the problem, there's no reason why a referral wouldn't be appropriate. I know what you mean though, some GPs are better than others.

WOW! That is a beast PF! I'm not bothered by spiders but I think I'd have second thoughts about that one!

Do you have poisonous spiders in Argentina btw?

Crikey Papafrita, that one looks foreign ! Glad its not in my house.
Tbh I'm not that bad with spiders but hate the jet black 'hiding in the rugs' spiders. My son feels physically sick looking at them after his nan showed him one through a magnifying glass, poor lad. Bit creepy when my 90 yr old customer said this of the big house spiders (to be read slowly in a yocal accent) "They run in pairs you know" . So not only am I putting out the one I can see, I'm looking for the one that's hiding !!
Phobias are no fun though and mine is deep black water. Didn't realise how bad until driving the car and spotting the dam a couple of hundred feet below. Managed to stop the car, kids screaming at me as I went into total hysteria, I was crying but laughing and uncontrollably shaking. Funny now but not at the time.

I can't work the quote thing on my phone, but to McNaughty and Puddock and others who think my post was insensitive, I did start by saying that if you suffer form a severe phobia ( and that is something that stops you going about you normal daily business) then they should seek help from a counselor.

I was merely pointing out that house spiders are harmless, but many of the general public seem to jump on the hysteria bandwagon where they are concerned. I don't know of anyone who has died from a UK house spider bite - although I do know that they can give you a nasty allergic reaction, similar to a wasp bite.
