Owning vs Loaning

Hi there, I posted something earlier re loaning and now keep thinking about all my options.

I have always had my own horse and never really thought about loaning. Most of the horses I have had I have just looked at them, liked them, bought them and realised they aren't quite right.

I have been on the look out for a horse and think I might have found the perfect one for me I have ridden him a few times and he has been super. I am actually SO BLOODY EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahem. Anyway, the horse is from a rescue place. He is on loan from them with his current owner. I am sharing him 2 days per week (weekday and weekend day). Its a bit weird as I have always been used to seeing my horse anytime I like but I feel quite restricted now i.e. I have had my lot for this weekend. He could do with a foot trim and a bit of feeding but I can't dictate that. Its frustrating. Plus, I don't know who else might ride him when I am not there even though I have not right to dictate that.

The owner has 6 other horses, she said herself she doesnt get to ride that often. I want to take him on but not sure how she will be about that. I know the obvious thing is to just ask.

So, I would really like to know, from a person who loans out their horses, how does it work? If I took him on full loan, pref to stay where he is as its nice, how does it all work!? I am not even sure if she would say yes..!?

Bottom line owning vs loaning.....
 
I might be wrong here, but am quite sure you wouldn't be able to loan this horse unless it was through the rescue centre he comes from, otherwise they wouldnt have anyway of tracing their horses if original loanees were allowed to loan out again to someone different.

Oh yes sorry that is an excellent point. I meant loan direct from the rescue centre as opposed to sharing and being dictated by his current "loaner" (even though she is absolutely lovey and very friendly :))
 
well, i currently own a couple of horses, one of which i paid quite a large amount of money for (in my books anyway!!) he has been lame for the past 12 months and i'm heartbroken. at the grand old age of 7 i'm going to have to retire him, or at least turn away for a very long time. so, there is no way i'll be buying again anytime soon. luckily i have lots of horsey friends who have horses they are desperate to go out and do a bit more that i can loan from. currently looking at taking one of my friends horses on full loan for a year as she is travelling. suits both of us. i'd probably always prefer to buy but after the last 12 months i just want some hassle free horse riding!!
 
Well i've never loaned before, but i have friends who loan from the WHW and they've never had any problems, an inspector comes to see them once or twice a year to see how the pony is getting on, otherwise they treat it as their own and intend to keep it for life. They got her as a 2 year old and she's now 6. :D
I suppose the advantage with rescue centers is if for some reason you cant keep the horse anymore you know it has somewhere safe to go back to...
 
You would have to be pretty careful as I expect the 'rescue place' may have placed restrictions on the current loaner as to how/if she can loan him and what his management should be. If rescue place is any good they should be checking up about feeding and foot care although that isn't always the case...

ETS, ignore that, I just saw your second post. Go for it if you can. Great arrangement.
 
I am hoping that the current loaner will be happy for me to take him off her hands. I like the current arrangement but i want to be the decision maker re his feed and feet (for example) and for no one else to ride him. Does that sound weird?!
