Hi

I am going to buy a calming product for my boy (16h Dutch Sports Horse). He is not a complete nutter but occassionally can really buck, rear and bronc if he doesnt want to do something ridden or on the ground. As a rider with medical problems that effect my stickability he knows when he can get one over on me and thats a bit scary. I know I cant back down to him but beause of my illness I physically cant sit through his antics either! I am hoping a good calmer will help me out.

On the ground I never back down and am fearless, but on top I am gonna lose and he knows it and occasionaly tests me out.

Oxyshot - The feedback sounds too good to be true but so many seem to be using it. It appeals to me as I dont need him on a daily supplement just a little help 2-3 times a week when I ride, he is lunged 3-4 times a week (I lunge if I am too ill to ride) and I have no problem with him then if he plays up I just show him whose the boss and then he backs down.

Please give me your experiences with this product good or bad!

Btw I love him to bits, he has a fab personality and have owned for a long time before my illness became so bad, so selling him is no option

Personally my experience with oxyshot was that it had no effect what so ever!!!

The one I have had most luck with is the Equine America Super Kalm but that is more for one off shows.

I think all calmers are just a question of trial and error for your particular horse and they don't all work in the sam eway for everyone

I looked into calmers for my young horse who had a rather extreme response to scary things - charge off bucking until rider falls off! Eventually put him on Blue Chip Karma, and also changed his feed to Winergy Equilibrium Low Starch, and, although it's only been a month and I'm not counting my chickens, I really do think that he's a different horse.

Equimins produce a good calmer but ultimately it depends on what suits your horse so you might need to play with a few (which could get expensive....) I tried oxyshot with my youngster and wouldn't say it made a huge difference - it's quite tricky to administer too. It's also fairly expensive - you'd spend almost £30 on a bottle that contains only 10 doses.....

I used Oxyshot on my horse who gets very tense and spooky, and it definitely made a difference, the two shows I used it on he did the best show jumping he has done, and we won a ODE - so thumbs up from me!! You do have to make sure they don't spit it all out though!!

I use Nupafeed on my dartmoor FR pony who is sharp at shows . On that he is amazing all day a real poppet, I have heard various things about Oxyshot including the fact that now they have remarketed it as an energy giver not a calmer so be carefull. If you want info on nupafeed ring them they are very helpful freindly people.
