Oxyshot...???

Never used it, heard mixed reviews - so thought I'd ask on here. :)

My 2 boys will be travelling to the South in the next couple of months, the tb has traveled miles and miles so is quite happy to travel - the cob hasnt! He will travel ok, but sometimes just gets a bit excited by it all and neighs or fidgits...and basically I dont want him upsetting the TB at the start of a 4 hour journey in the trailer. So..Anyone used it or anything similar?
 
I am currently having lessons with a very well respected Trainer who absolutely raves about Oxyshot (I dont think she sells it or anything so no vested interest) However, I have only ever used it once on an excitable mare doing her 1st outdoor dressage test of the season & it made no difference whatsoever.

TBH once I read the ingredients (air & water) I just couldnt bring myself to buy it again!!!!!

If you want to try it it certainly wont do any harm but hopefully your nice settled TB will keep the cob quiet rather than the other way round.
 
Thanks for that, :) unfortunately the tb is the baby of the 2 and he gets upset if the cob is excited, so I'm just looking for something to keep the cob a little more settled - any other suggestions?
 
comes in syringes, 3 doses per syringe....i use it for the excitable ones before a show. you have to give it 2hours before the *event* .
wont make a nutter a dobbin, but takes the hysterical edge off i find.
 
Another vote for Equine America So Calm, it was recommended to me by MillbrookSong on here for my TB and it works brilliantly :) I had tried Oxyshot and NAF Magic before on him but they didnt work, he gets VERY tense and spooky at new venues. I generally give him half a syringe at a time :)
 
I've used it on mine before now. It was after he'd been in for 2 weeks with the snow and I was a little apprehensive about what he would do when being put out (the snow was still there too and I didn't want him going mental and running through the electric fence due to not seeing it!).
I gave him 2 1/2 doses of the stuff on a fairly empty stomach and it really worked. He went out like a total dobbin and stood munching on some hay. Ordinarily he would have been hitting the roof. In fact, the next day when I put him out without it, he did go quite mad. So I quite rate the stuff :)
 
I find Oxyshot helps focus the horses when in work, it helped me take a sharp horse to HOYS but i would not say it helps calm them.

If in doubt get some ACP tablets from your vets as a few tablets would just help take the edge off and stop any excited behaviour on going on a road trip, but the Equine America So Kalm is good too, as well as the Carl Hester calmer this knocks one of my horse flat!!!

It might be worth trying a few to see how they affect your horse before you go as different ones affect each horse differently.

I've used oxyshot on one of my mares when my sister started to ride her. Mare used to get quite stressed out when taking her to places, and would get herself in a tizz not knowing whether she was coming or going and would get nappy. It made a huge difference, just seemed to take the edge off her and she concentrated and focused a lot better. I tried on another horse and it didn't make much difference, I think it depends on the horse and the way it reacts to outings etc.
 
Thanks guys. I think I'll probably give the equine america one a go before the travel day.

Murphy is normally a happy go lucky chap without a care in the world. Unless he thinks theres chance he can wind Val up. If I take Val for a hack and Murphy sees me leave - no problem, he looks up then goes back to grazing...However - put Val in a trailer and Murphy has to gallop around squealing like he's just been shot in the butt! This reaction of course upsets val - so Murphy has to stay in his stable whilst we go out to play.

So normally I'd say they are both good travellers so I wont worry, I just dont want to take the risk of Murphy being fidgity on the journey and upsetting Val. But at the same time I dont feel it necessary to sedate him. :/
