Pacers.

Weve got 2 on our yard - an old retired racing one and a pacer X.

She has awful paces - her walk is a shuffle and the canter is flat as well, dont even get me started on the trot thing!

The obviously have their place but i wouldnt personally buy one unless i wanted to drive one. There tempraments are nothing to be desired either (not tarring them all with the same brush thou).

I had to join this forum just to reply. I have a Pacer and he is wonderful, I have always said I would definately have another but I may just have been lucky with my boy. He is stunning and people always comment when Im out riding what a beautiful horse he is. He does trot normally and only paces when he gets excited and canters easily.

i have one to!
shes very placid and kind.
only started working with her these past couple of months as she had a foal..
her trot is lovely rides well in the paddock.

on the lane shes a bit more joggy but is stoppable.
when trotting and trying for canter she does tend to pace.

and then i give up lol .cos im buggered lol

im just going to take my time with her and im pretty sure i will get there in the end

but any more advice im willing to take as i have never had a pacer before...

I had a full pacer, bred to race, on loan years ago and she was only 4 and just broken, very very easy to bring on, I never came off her in the 18 months I had her. Took a long time to get her cantering and jumping but we got there... and she could nap! Big time! But I think that was her just being a bag. Her temperament was lovely, in fact Ive known a lot of pacers and they have all been lovely.
My friend still has my loan horse's half brother, who is also a pacer. He is a good allrounder but due to his pacing and excitability, has never been an exceptional jumper as he crashes through them (doesnt know where hes putting his feet!). He is beautiful though.
On the other hand, I was offered to buy the loan mare I had but I declined as she was never going to be able to do all the things I wanted to do... Shes now very happy I believe with someone who works for the BHS - do any of you pacer people know her, she was called Trixie and her mum was called Cherry, she was bred at Carrington?

no sorry but im sure someone will know her or heard of them ..

i dont do shows i just have mine purely for pleasure and fun
i love mine i think shes lovely ..
i have the foal to and shes a demon lol

im led to believe that the stallion was a piebald trotter too..
love mine to bits .. just hoping that the young one will not pace lol

Oh Im glad other people have had nice pacers, mine is fab and will gallop down a field in a group or wait at the top until the others have finished or take a child on a pony down for a canter. He does have a 'strange' jump but that doesnt bother me as he 17 now and has always taken good care of me in any situation. I actually enjoy pacing trot even though some people do laugh at me

i know that feeling all to well lol .. think i need to get another support bra pmsl..

sasha is lovely she is so kind .. not managed the canter as of yet like i said in previous post but im determined... if you want to pm me for piccy you can ...

Friend sold one last year. Fantastic jumper, made it all look so easy and could pull a spare leg or two out if needed. They spent a long time working up his dressage but he never found canter very easy and when stressed would revert to pacing. He was a really super horse though and has found a fantastic family home doing tet - XC was always his favourite thing.

I used to ride a pacer and he was a sweetie - his owner had owned him about three years when I rode him so had been reschooled etc. He only paced when excited - he napped occasionally but was learning to calm down. I think the intensive training he must have had from a young age disagreed with him. I met up with them again at Christmas and he was so chilled that J's daughter was riding him

We've got a pacer, who, I must say is an exceptional jumper.
His trot is getting better and the canter on the right rein is not too bad however on left rein he is pretty awfull and he becomes disunited frequently. Any tips welcome.

Also those of you who compete,do you ever get asked if your horse is lame?

ive tried to loose school and she went pretty well soon got the idea of what to do so i put up a small jump well she didnt have a clue whats so ever bless so i think i will just stick to the walk trot and eventually a canter!

ps for those who have a pacer what bit do they usually use when they are raced? just curious that all
