hi new pony has a pad of fat under the cantle, she's otherwise quite slim (native) and her ribs are visible but not unhealthily so. The fatty pads are not painful so press and she enjoys a good massage so I don't think it's anything sinister, cos there's n pain response in her back. But saddle fitting....she's come with an old saddle with virtually no depth of flocking under the cantle. it fits well, anything else bridges the gap from fat to withers. But it needs reflocking, and like most old saddles the gullet is narrow. Before I go to the expense of reflocking, is there a better saddle alternative? Ideally I don't want the saddle to cost more than the pony! thanks

My native cross gets fat pads , even when at a good weight. ( as confirmed by vet) he has been a difficult horse to fit. You need a very good saddler, that's the best advice I can share.
I tried to spend on a good saddle but the only fit and suitable saddle was a windtec, so there you go

Are you sure they're not behind where the saddle should sit and that, in fact, under the saddle is a dent? This is caused by saddles that sit too low at the back, with all the rider's weight on the cantle, and/or a panel that is too thin/hard. It sounds like both of these are the case with yours, I see it a lot with showing saddles expecially. A too narrow gullet at the rear will only make the situation worse. On many occasions the saddles I fit (regular prices Walsall made leather saddles) cost more than the pony, they all deserve a good fit!
