Hi my arthritic horse has just been fitted with pads under his shoes. Never had these sort before, they are leather ones moulded to the foot. He has previously had the gel filler but this kept falling out.
I wasn't there when the farrier came as working so my question is how do I care for these? Can I turnout in them? Our fields are shut at the moment as too boggy but we have an all weather turnout. I am worried about using this in case the sand gets under the pads and irritates his feet.
I will contact the farrier next week but just wondered if anybody had any experiences?

Turn out as normal & the pads don't need any special treatment. My lad always had putty under his, but I've known others that don't & don't have problems.

Great thanks so much for that. I will ring and speak to farrier in the week to double check but that has set my mind at rest as was panicking he wouldn't be able to have a good roll in the sand turnout pen x

When my horse had them fitted my farrier said to squirt Milton fluid down them from the heel end once a week as it was open. When they've had them on for a while and are shod it stinks. But I think leather are better because it does breath I would have thought

My boy had plastic pads under his hind shoes to raise his heals for hock arthritis. He was turned out as normal in the field, every six weeks when the shoes/pads was taken off to be trimmed/re fitted his feet underneath was always fine.
