Pain? Or just plain naughty?

Yes, good luck. I really hope it isn't what my mare suffered, just offering my experience of something perhaps to check. Hopefully it's something much easier to sort out!

Will she canter off a voice aid ?
If so I would put up,your stirrups a couple of holes go into a light forward seat and use the voice aid to canter ( I know it's incorrect ) you need to just get cantering if it works you can gradually get back to the proper way.
Also it's worth asking the girl on the yard that rides her exactly how shes given the aid , also watch her ride if you can and see if you see any differences.

You are right - she has always objected to being ridden, she has had attitude from the day she was born (apparently). Was a challenge to break in, challenge when first schooling etc. She is one of these mares that thinks she owns the place, thinks she knows best and doesnt like being told otherwise!

There are plenty of Alfa mares who don't react like this when ridden. In fact the way this mare reacts is unusual rather than the norm.

my only suggestion is something that jennie loristan clark used to do with feisty mares. she turned them out at night, she said for some reason they were much calmer the next day and easier to manage. may be worth a try...

It would be interesting to see a video if you're brave enough to face the crit! Someone might be able to see something in the horse or something you're doing that couldn't possibly come across just by describing what's happening.

Another perspective on this issue...

"We've had him checked and he's just being a brat."

How many times have you heard that said of a horse who had started bucking, bolting, rearing or showing aggression toward people or other horses?

"There was nothing on the X-rays. He even had a bone scan. It cost a fortune. He is simply naughty."

Love it!
I do think chronic pain/discomfort can also cause heightened responses ie. generally hyper or spooky as well. I feel on edge or jumpy when in persistent gnawing pain...

I am waiting patiently for an opportunity to post another Epona TV link! ;)

Perhaps they haven't been taught how to behave consistently by humans? I read such stories about what goes on on some liveries I am not surprised some horses are defensive! They never know what mood the human might be in ad have to learn to respond differently to each individual or be at the mercy of their wrath! They are put in stressful situations eg. other horses tied outside their box and then punished for protecting themselves...

And some horses have great lives are equal partnerships in their ridden work and feel confident and happy to be ......Naughty ..... You need to meet Fatty.
In Ops case Pro Sets are known often to be handfuls ( my trainer has one he's a handful ) a I can imagine a pro set /tb will be a lot of horse .
I worked with young dressage horses in my youth some where extremely challenging when young even in very good situations they can be difficult , it's perfectly possible this horse is just taking the Micky of OP .

Haven't read the whole thing,

But does she buck when on the lunge?
I think if i was in your shoes i would lunge to see if she did it then as it maybe excitement, also you can push her on without the pressure of falling off if she throws a large buck? or free schooling..

Just ideas sorry!

Many of will have seen horses who behave differently with different riders .
In OP's case I would trying to break down exactly what the other riders that canter this horse is doing.
Issues around going into canter are not unusual at this stage one of my homebreds sharp and clever was very difficult about the canter transition for quite a long time.
OP needs lots help on the ground from people who know this horse it's a great pity that the pro that the horse first is so far away .
To answer you question I have no idea what this horse thinks I have never seen him once you have seen a horse and ridden you can take a guess about what driving the behaviour .

Okay, thanks - so "taking the micky" could mean different things in different horses and situations? The reason I ask is that one often hears the phrase used to describe a horse's behaviour but I have never really understood what it is supposed to mean. If it depends on the situation (or horse), that makes it quite hard to be sure what someone means by "taking the micky" without further information - but it also makes it less helpful for someone to suggest the horse is taking the micky if they haven't seen the horse behaving in the situation. Does that make sense?!
