We are looking at doing a pain relief trial with my little horse to see if it helps him be happier and more comfortable. He's not awfully sore or lame by any means, but we've been quite far down the investigations path and he just has some quirky things he does which may be pain related and though I appreciate pain can't ever definitively be ruled out, I feel that I want to take the steps I can to understand him and help him be happy and comfortable. The plan is to use Equioxx, paracetamol and gabapentin to potentially target different sources of pain - we did discuss just using Equioxx to start with, but some of the quirky things he does make me wonder about nerve pain hence the gabapentin, and the way my vets do this sort of trial seems to be to use the three simultaneously to be relatively comprehensive, then I think gradually take them away to ascertain which/ which combination if any were making the difference. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences they'd mind sharing please of use of these drugs, if you'd seen any side effects etc? I am slightly questioning it as I don't want to be OTT but on the other hand I know because of the path we have travelled over the past year or so, I feel like I need to put my mind at rest as much as possible by exploring all options. Thank you 🙂

I would be guided by your vet. I seem to remember that when my mare needed Equiox, it was only for a maximum of 3 days but it might be like Cocodamol for people and can be taken for longer, with careful monitoring if warranted.

If you can ask your vet to prescribe Previcox instead of Equiox, the price difference is significant. Same drug, same manufacturer, different packaging - but Equiox is licenced for use in horses. The law is indeed an ass. Old Dobbin has been on it for over seven years.

Pain trials are definitely a good idea, the short term use of the meds your vet is suggesting shouldn’t be problematic and any negatives should hopefully be offset by helping find the answer to your horse’s problem! Good luck 🍀

Thank you all :) We did look into Previcox as he's quite small and I believe the thinking was that we could dose him more accurately with that but it's not possible to get unfortunately.
