Hi,
I have a lovely little 7yo warmblood mare who I have had for 3 and a half months. I bought her for showjumping, but so far have had very little success as she has mood swings at the flick of a switch!

She can be going fine one moment and suddenly she will refuse to jump, and then often refuse to move, bucking, kicking out and rearing if i try and make her go forward. She is in no other pain and she is more than capable of doing the jumps Im asking her to do.
She has silents seasons, with no real visable signs so its hard to predict them.
Question is, does this sound like she has painful seasons, or could she has ovarian cysts? Also, how could these be treated? And what are the success rates? I also read about an injection that can be given in australia that stops seasons altogether for between six and twelve months, does anyone know whether these are available in the UK, or is there a good equivalent?
Thanks!!!

hi, this sounds a lot like my girl. I would ask your vet to prescribe regumate which is a drug that regulates seasons or if used continuously prevents them. if she has silent seasons then the chances are that she has a hormone imbalance and the regumate will help to sort this out. Often mares have a abundance of cells building up in the ovaries which will lead to them becoming enlarged, this obviously makes them uncomfortable, especially when wearing a saddle and carrying a rider.

If the regumate doesn’t work then the vet will scan her to check for cysts etc, if they are there then they can be operated on but depending on the severity the mare may never be able to carry a foal.

If after all that you still have problems then the best way is to trick her in to thinking she is going to be a mum. this is done by putting them into foal, letting them carry it for a number of weeks and then "squeezing" the embryo.

Hope this helps,

It could be a number of things, I think you need to talk to your vet get her scanned and then take his advice

Thanks guys!! Bexaco, good to know Im not the only one with this haha! May well try Regumate, I'd read up about it and just never put two and two together!!

I would get your vet to scan her ovaries - at least that would rule in or out any cysts - if she has a large one it will be giving out lots of testosterone which will affect her temperament and also cause her rear/buck etc. Our mare is recovering from having a huge cyst removed nearly three months ago - still on field rest so don't know if she will be ridable but keeping our fingers crossed!

Supagran, I don't know if this helps but my mare had an op to remove her overies at the beginning of june and is now back being ridden
