paint horse too small??

If he felt right then go for it, you are absolutely not too big! I get so cross with people who think adults on ponies are a no no, my boy is 14hh well made cob type, I am 5 7" and 11 stone. Good luck:))

This horse sounds perfect for you, all this height/weight ratio drives me mad! This is me and my connie, he's 14 now. I'm 5'9 and 14st (+) most of the time, plus saddle...he's got a height cert of 148cm. He happily carries me all day, at speed if he gets the choice!!

Yep sounds ideal - pretty sure these horses are tough little things in any case and if it has a strong back and good conformation (vet will confirm) then I think you should be fine. As long as you dont do what I do and put on a stone every Christmas!! :)

Sounds utterly perfect for you. - if you feel at home on him then that's the most important thing. You ride to enjoy yourself, and it sounds like you really enjoyed your ride!

One of our polo ponies is 14.2hh, a little pocket rocket - and she's probably the toughest of the lot!

As soon as I go back on Monday I will take some! He needs a bit of feeding up, pampering and muscle tone and he will be something really special. I hope that he passes his vetting and that he doesn't show any deal breaking traits when I go back, then it is a done deal! :)

Thankyou - he was arrogant, bolshy and opinionated on the ground. Certifiable at times to ride when he got himself in a tiz, but had the heart of a lion and always tried his best. I trusted him totally. I was too tall for him by the time we were 18 (I was a later developer!) but there was no way he was going anywhere as I felt so safe on him despite the regular (but always very controlled!) rearing :D Size really doesn't matter as long as they and you are comfortable.
Sounds like my 6 year old Welsh D minus the rearing though. I look forward to the days when I have my jumping confidence back and can have a nice photo likes yours jumping something fun looking on him :D http://www.flickr.com/photos/112093906@N08/11479660635/

Absolutely right that those breeds are used as working horses in the US with grown men aboard, and sometimes perhaps a calf in trouble slung across the saddle to bring it in. They are sturdy compact horses and should be fine for you. Horses that are used for reining, cutting, roping, etc, that are not over that size, (ie professional rodeo sports) and no one ever worries about them being too small. Go for it-- if you are comfortable and have that "click" with the horse, that is what you are looking for!

well without seeing a photo of you on him its difficult to know, however, I am 5'10" and a bit... I have regularly ridden friends 14hh connemara and a 14.3 welsh - both of them took up my leg and i looked fine, so i dont see why you couldnt be perfect for each other... best of luck OP, hope it all goes well and i look forward to seeing photos! :)

If he is a stock-horse type Paint then he sounds perfect for you, the stock horse breeds have much deeper girths than English breeds and are built to work - so long as you are comfortable and confident on him, that's what really matters. Actually your dilemma made me laugh, I am 6 ft and my Quarter Horse is 14.3hh.

Definitely not too small as those familiar with the breed have already pointed out ;)

If this particular mare is not for sale have a look at Quarter Horses. They are my favourite breed. You don't/ won't need a light saddle either ;) If you haven't already have a look into western riding, book a couple lessons and not only will you be reassured that you're not too big you'll be hooked!

I wouldn't worry about it, if you're happy and the horse is then go for it. I would never normally consider looking at horses below 16hh as I'm quite tall, 16hh being the absolute minimum (I actually feel a little big on my current 16hh). I've just got a 15.3hh ;) I know its not much of a height difference but she does look small when stood beside my 17hh. I'm actually rather looking forward to riding something smaller and more pony like :)

Go for it, you are not too big at all IMO, I am the same height and currently a bit heavier than you after xmas  and have a 14.2
He sounds fab, and you felt great riding him,as some one else said, tell your hubby size isn't everything ;) hehe

I love Paint horses. I've ridden quite a few QH's and Paints and never felt under horsed. I think you will have a ball with him; he sounds lovely.
