I've finally dug out around the back of our barn and discovered a not-too-shabby set of old wooden showjump wings. They're currently all wood and no paint - I was thinking I ought to paint them up and make them a bit nicer. Does anyone have any recommendations for outdoor-rain-rot-proof paint? Do I need to undercoat them? Thanks!

Sand them down, undercoat and then use any gloss exterior paint you like. I made my own a few years back... 2 coats of each. B&Q and Homebase always have the small 500ml pots and as long as you stick them in a cupboard wehre they ar protected from cold or heat, you'll be able to use teh same cans for a couple of years...also hammerite is really good for painting up barrels and stops them rusting...avoid silver if your horse is a bit on the spooky side

yup sand and undercoat first, gloss over in colour. screwfix bit cheaper thn homebase just not as much coice on colours i dont think

I made 5 pairs of wings a few years ago & to be honest I hate painting so I sprayed the wings with a blue wood preserver from Wilkinsons. I then masked off the poles with pieces of newspaper & then sprayed & I ended up with blue wings & blue striped poles. I did 3 sets in blue & the other 2 in brown. Not as bright as paint but it was very quick to do & they are still fine.

I painted up some of my poles and wings a few years back - abotu 5 years - and i just used what emulsion i found lying round - they are still really bright and the wood is fine!! Didnt cost me a penny...

On bare poles I used primer, undercoat and then gloss on top.

However I didn't rub them down between coats and they haven't lasted that well (my father was tut tut'ing as coats were too thick and had runs...)

I think spraying would be better as you'd get a stronger thinner coat.

Have to admit I would now buy plastic poles!

Oh crikey, it is a good job I only have a few ratty poles and fillers for practice in the woods. I slap some undercoat on then go to town with a spray can!
