Painting stables

What sort of paint do I need to paint the stable doors? And do I need to do an undercoat first?

Stables are outdoor ones but we have a big overhang so the doors do not really get wet.

Just looking at doing the doors at the moment (and possibly the window frames!)

All acrylic paints are least toxic, fast drying, no fumes. True eco non-toxic clay based paints dont do well exposed to external weathers, more suited for indoor use. Non-toxic oils like linseed oils are good for barewood preservative. (Tho you may find the horse licking its door! )

Whatever paint you use, do note that if the door has previously been creosoted or wood treated, you might well run into 'bleeding' or adhering issues.

My painter and decorator said to use something like cuprinol exterior paint but I have used basic wood stain and it was fine but your limited to colours with that.

What colour was you thinking only asking as I was considering doing mine a colour rather than boring brown stain

I’m just doing the doors at the moment and they are white so will redo in white I think. The stables are wooden (and very old) and the doors and windows including the tack room are white but in desperate need of a paint. I’ve bought some pink and purple too as I’m going to paint some spare wooden fence posts to make some poles for using for schooling.

Black and white wooden stables look nice so you could contrast it.

That sounds good, a ‘Hunter green’ would look lovely. I’d love brick stables - I bet they stay lovely and cool in the summer? Mine get too hot at times.

They do stay pretty cool thankfully, my friend has wooden stables and she bought some huge metal fans from Amazon and her partner hung them high up on the wall inside and they really made a difference you can really feel them.

Hmm that’s worth a thought! I’m lucky that our fields have lots of trees in so I turn them out in the shade when it’s too hot.

I’ve always used a stain for stables/fencing and any wood really that would face the elements.
