Hi, I know most of you probably Event or Showjump but im looking for some advice on showing.
I am thinking of entering my horse into the Palamino class at the Royal Norfolk Show. My horse is unregistered and of unknown breeding but he is a stunning color and moves very well. I have shown at local level with some success in Riding Horse and Vetran classes (he is 20) with judges either seeming to love him (to the point of offering me money) or hate him and don't look twice.
Does anyone know what sort of things judges look for in palamino classes? Just colour and confomation or are they ridden. If anyone knows where i could get more information or direct me towards a forum with more showing riders i would be very grateful!

I've never seen a palomino class itself, but I would assume they will judge them in a similar way to coloured classes, in which case confromation and performance is what is being judged, not the actual colouring of the horse.

You may need to be registered with some palomino society, but the schedule should specifiy this. The schedule should also specify if the class is ridden or inhand.

I used to do Palamino classes, we used to have to strip out all the black hair in my poor mares tail to get a higher placing. I was young but I remember the classes then were combined with coloureds.

I've seen some Palomino classes, they have a big range of types and breeds normally and can be ridden or in hand.

Haven't a clue about the judging except that I think they do judge on the quality and trueness of the palomino colour. Check that the class is for any palomino of any type or breed and not strictly for registered palominos - they do have a register in the USA and they are treated like a breed rather than a colour.

Might be worth posting in breeding there are a few enthusiasts of unusual colours in there that might know......

Hi bit random but was your palomino from the norfolk area? I have a palomino of a similar age (now 33) and have managed to track down lots of her relatives. Her show name is Ranchwood true colours.

A friend of mine in the New Forest had a very pretty registered palomino mare, she did extremely well and was Show Champion at area level more than once. What I do know is that it really is all about the colour for the registered classes. A horse or pony will attain perfection at a certain age and retain it for a while, then they fade out somewhat. so at 20 your horse would do best in veteran classes where presumably the colour change would be acceptable.
Of course, at local, unaffiliated level you could show her in any class that you care to enter as you have already found.

I used to show my friend's palamino's. They should be a solid colour. The BPS will have the standards they require for showing. Have a search for Shulay Faberge. He was the competition when I was around.
