Hi everyone,

I have a palomino mare I have owned her for 1 year. Her coat colour changes throughout the seasons, this time last year she was quite dark in colour but this year she just isn't as dark and her coat looks patchy.

The first picture is start of May last year. The second picture is 8th of May this year.

Is this normal for horses to grow their summer coats at different times each year?

Does anyone else own a palomino that has seasonal coat colour changes, when are your palominos at their darkest?

Thank you!

Oh yes! Mine is all the colours or the rainbow. She’s a darkish caramel at the moment and I think will go more gold as she bleaches out over summer.

These are some of the colours that she has been.

Eta, darkest in spring when her winter coat sheds out.

Wow! I can't believe how much she has changed colours! Thank you for sharing that!
So do you think my mare won't get any darker this year or is just a case of waiting and finding out?

Thank you!

Has she shed out properly? And are you in the UK? We have had a weird spring!

Mine is always darkest just after she has shed. It could be though, that yours has held onto a bit of her lighter winter coat while her darker coat has come through and that’s giving the appearance of being lighter.

Is she out a lot?

Your mare is very lovely! How is she bred?

It seems as though her coat is patchy and there is still some winter coat coming out on the lighter parts, but her neck is quite light and there isn't any coat coming out at all on her neck! I am in the UK yes it has been a strange spring!

She is out less this year compared to last year due to me having to have her on full livery and they bring in around 3pm!

Thank you your mare is lovely too, my mare is by the stallion perlino kinsky but unfortunately do not know her dam. What about your mare?
