Hi, my Welsh A mare produced a palomino foal this year a month ago and he has started to shed his baby coat. Underneath appears to be grey - this isn't something I've seen before, can palomino foals change colour completely?

:)What colour are the sire and dam? A grey parent means that the foal could grey out.

Or...the palomino could just be going very, very light (Ysabella), almost cream. I have had some palominos go so pale that white markings were well nigh invisible but they were still palomino, not grey, cremello or anything else.

Do you have photos?

Thanks both! I think the new coat may well be grey, Mum is blue roan and I have no idea what colour the sire was because she ran with a 'wild' herd bred by a man who should know better. I don't have any pics of the foal on the net, only my phone and none of the changing coat, he looks so scruffy :-(.

I bought a beautiful palomino filly in Ireland with Cruising lines, and was very smug and very excited about my new girl - until 3 months later she shed her gorgeous palomino winter coat and there was her grey coat :( My palomino is no more (although still very beautiful)

So yes, palominos can change into greys!!

I'd throw the biggest hissy fit going if mine sheds out grey!

Pretty unlikely though, as there isn't a single grey for at least 6 generations so I could be okay.:)
