If you put a Palomino stallion that throws only dun or palomino to a grey mare that was born piebald and had one previous foal gone grey at 6yo and was born dark bay, what colour could the resulting foal be?

Okay, breaking this down into steps. Your palomino stallion is dilute chestnut. Both his colour genes are chestnut (homozygous) with one copy of the dilute gene to make him palomino. Therefore, he can only throw a chestnut gene. 50 % of the time, he will also throw a dilute gene which can lead to a palomino or buckskin (not dun) foal. if he's only produced palomino or buckskins, they've been careful about the colour of the mares he's covered.

The grey is tricky. You know she has 1 copy of grey because that's what she's expressing. You know she probably has one copy of black because she was born piebald - however, this could have been bay misidentified if she was dark. You know she also has a gene for white markings, because she expressed a white pattern at birth but you know she isn't homozygous for this because her daughter isn't carrying it.

So your stallion can throw chestnut or chestnut. Your mare can throw grey or black. If she throws grey, the foal will ALWAYS turn grey. If she throws black, the foal will be black because chestnut needs two copies of the gene.

However, your stallion can also throw dilute. This won't be noticeable on the grey but would result in a smokey black foal.

And your mare can throw white patterns, although if she also throws grey they'll fade.

Lots going on and lots of possibilities.

Grey is a different gene to black. She could throw black and grey. What you dont know is if she has 1 or 2 copies of grey. If she has 2 copies then every foal without exception will be grey. If she has 1 copy then its a 50/50 chance as to whether they grey out or not.

The stallion could be carrying agouti hidden by the chestnut if he's had buckskin foals so she could also have a bay or buckskin foal with/without grey or white patterns.

Late to the party.
Stallion could be without testing or knowing previous mares colours

Or

Agouti gene doesn’t show on red based as it affects how black pigment is distributed (black points on bays etc) but it still exists.
And for the mare
Ee aa GrGr Tt
EE aa Grgr Tt
Couldn’t be homozygus Tobiano as she’s foaled a solid turned grey.

So knowing nothing else choices are
Chestnut, palomino
Bay, buckskin
Black, smoky black (just looks black)
All with or without grey or tobiano.

Just to be awkward if the stallion is only throwing dilute foals are you 100% sure he is palomino and not a double dilute?

🤔there’s a thought. Though it could just be a luck of the draw type thing. I suppose then the question would be. Does the stallion have blue eyes.

Well My chosen stallion was a palomino, and the mare was a pale dun who changed to rose grey, foal was palomino. This was my chosen stallion http://www.wildenfarm.co.uk/horses/sedgehill gold.html

Buckskin is bay with a copy of cream. He got the cream from his mum, who is chestnut with 1 copy of cream.

You need 2 copies of chestnut to make chestnut/palomino. So he got 1 copy of chestnut from mum and one copy of bay from dad (simplified that a bit!)

Dad has a gene to create spots. He hasnt passed this on, unless yours is young. Sometimes they spot out as they get older. Has yours got the stripy feet and mottled eyes?

No stripey feet, no mottling. He is 6yrs old. He was sold as a connie - but isn't, lol.

looks like he didnt get the spotty gene then. Oddly enough I know someone with a "connie" Hes grey but when they bath him you can see he was leopard spotted once over, so clearly not quite a connie after all!
