I've had my horse nearly 9 months, when I first got him I used Noropaz which made him colic.
Since then i've been super paranoid in worming him (my last horse died of colic - not worming related) but was advised to use Panacur 5 day guard.

I'm so paranoid that i'd like to know if its safe?
He lives out 24/7 and lives on his own (company in field opposite), does he HAVE to be stabled? Can he still be worked? We are jumping, galloping about this coming week, so would rather be safe then sorry.

Any advice welcomed.

Hello
Panacur 5 day guard has both good and bad points. It does have a high tolerance so you can give loads over the dose and it would still be safe, however when tackling encysted larvae unlike Equest it causes the worms to emerge before killing them. There is also known resistance to this wormer in nearly 100% of cases so it may not even do anything. Honestly I would call my vet and have a chat particularly as you have had wormer related colic previously (did you report this as an adverse reaction to the Veterinary Medicines Directory?) and they will be able to give you the right advice on how to deal with situation. I would also recommend using worm egg counts to see if he actually needs worming.
Good luck :)

Thank you CharliePonyPops,
I was thinking of a worm count but know it doesn't show certain worms etc.
He's an ex racer and i got him straight off of the track so assume, as he was such a good racer he was well looked after, so hope he's not too bad. (he looks very good at the moment)

To be honest i didn't report it, I never knew there was a place to report it.
I'll give my vet a ring and see what she thinks,

Thanks

A worm egg count won't pick up encysted larvae and you will need a blood test or the new saliva test for tapeworms but this may just give you an over view. The veterinary medicines directory are responsible for licensing products and they have a form for any adverse reactions so they can monitor to see if the product is still safe for use.
Best of luck and I am sure your vet will point you in the right direction :)
